The mighty Godzilla prepares to resurface on a cinema screen near you…
Despite only boasting a handful of sequences of the mighty King of the monsters, Gareth Edwards’ superb resurrection of Toho’s famous monster rebooted his prestigious legacy and cemented a profitable return to the big screen. Godzilla emerged from the depths to restore nature’s balance when a trio of colossal monsters was gestated from radiation incubated eggs to unleash their fury on our unsuspecting world.
Despite his limited screen presence, Godzilla was glorious, a true representation of the famous monster. One that swiftly dispelled the notorious defamation of Roland Emmerich’s movie that only served to erode the character’s iconic status. The blissful redesign of the creature was fantastic, the iconic roar was restored to glory and the synonymous atomic fire breath, a feature omitted from Emmerich’s vision was restored to prominence.
In short, Godzilla was back and ready to reclaim his position as King of the box office.
Godzilla’s success was instrumental in the return of the greatest cinematic titan in living memory, King Kong who returned to the big screen in Kong: Skull Island in early 2017. Like Godzilla, King Kong was redesigned to resemble his original 1933 incarnation designed by screen legend Willis O’Brien and despite not being regarded as an instant classic, Skull Island served to bring Kong back to the forefront of cinema for the first time since Peter Jackson’s marvellous take on the ape’s legacy. With both titans brought into the same universe, the fans were teased with a potential crossover event. A movie decades in the making. And in 2020, that dream is set to be realised in the highly anticipated motion picture Godzilla vs Kong.
Serving as a predecessor to the ultimate clash of the monsters will be the sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, a direct follow up to Gareth Edwards’ original movie. The film is set to be released next year and will feature a host of Godzilla’s greatest arch enemies including Mothra, King Ghidorah and Rodan. All three of these infamous monsters are set to emerge from the shadows to challenge Godzilla for dominance over our fragile planet, all the while the mighty King Kong is waiting in the wings to stake his claim. The movie will be directed by Michael Dougherty and will feature Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) in prominent roles.
After what has seemed like an eternity, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros have delivered our first look at the upcoming blockbuster and have revealed what we can expect when Godzilla returns to our screens next year. A showcase from Entertainment Weekly has revealed a glimpse of Godzilla as well as Farmiga and Bobby Brown in their roles.

The synopsis for the movie is as follows:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Vera Farmiga plays Dr Emma Russell in the film, a paleobiologist working for the Monarch organization. Millie Bobby Brown plays her daughter, Madison, and when the pair are kidnapped by “a mysterious organization,” Russell’s ex-husband (Kyle Chandler) embarks on a rescue mission along with Dr Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and Dr Vivienne Graham (Sally Hawkins). The mysterious organization responsible for kidnapping Dr Russell and her daughter have their own plans for the creatures, which may have a connection to Dr Russell’s research. Vera Farmiga has previously teased that her character has established a method to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level.
Michael Dougherty has revealed that his sequel picks up five years after the events of the first film and showcases a world living in fear. Despite Godzilla having disappeared, the world remains gripped in a cycle of deadly fear, dreading the emergence of the next would-be destructor of our way of life. This all sets up a gripping spectacle when King Kong emerges to reclaim his title and dethrone the would-be conquerors of the world. Michael Dougherty also revealed that there are definitely some bread crumbs in his film which will tease the big showdown, a titbit that will excite the monster lovers amongst us.
My passion for fantasy adventures began with the original King Kong and I cannot wait to see the result of Legendary Pictures’ efforts when Godzilla vs Kong is unleashed in 2020. The clash of the greatest monsters in movie history is upon us and the anticipation for Godzilla vs Kong starts here, but first, we are all invited to face off against Godzilla one more time.
And then, King Kong will be back to retake the Monsterverse…
And in this universe…Kong is King!
