Annlyel explores the emotional journeys of Hawkeye and Nebula and their need for revenge going into Avengers: Endgame…
With the tragic conclusion of Infinity War Avengers: Endgame is looking to be the most emotional instalment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Avengers have been beaten, their duty to keep the galaxy safe has failed miserably, and yet they’re not going to lie down and weep in a corner for the rest of time. They are going to fix what happened. For every Avenger they have a reason to defeat Thanos but for Nebula and Hawkeye, their reasons may be the most personal of them all.
Both Nebula and Hawkeye have lost their loved ones by Thanos’s hand. Gamora, who was Nebula’s sister and dearest friend, was killed by Thanos in exchange for the Soul Stone. And Hawkeye’s family was clearly reduced to ash due to the infamous snap, sending Clint Barton on a dark path.
For both of these characters, they have been placed on the sidelines, acting as semi-sidekicks to other more important heroes. Now they’re more important than ever, for their stories hold an emotional weight the other Avengers don’t have. And it is that emotional complexity that has me so invested in their stories.
While I’m clearly excited to see the conclusions of characters like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, etc. I’m really intrigued about Hawkeye and Nebula. They have always fascinated me in the MCU but they have never been given large, substantial roles. Because of that, to see that more attention will be provided to them this time around makes them definitely the most interesting characters in Endgame.
I’m just hoping that by the end of the film they will both survive and not perish in their attempt to avenge their family. That would be very, very sad.
