Ron Howard is Developing a Willow Series for Disney+

Warwick Davis is expected to return with Solo’s Jon Kasdan writing the script

For far too long, fans of the original 1988 fantasy classic Willow have been pleading with Lucasfilm for a sequel. The story, written by Star Wars Godfather George Lucas and directed by Hollywood legend Ron Howard followed the adventures of a struggling sorcerer who stumbled upon a lost infant. As it turned out, the infant was, in fact, a princess called Elora Danan who had been prophesied to bring about the downfall of the evil Queen Bavmorda whose tyranny had spread across the land. Teaming up with the renegade warrior Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), Willow vows to keep Elora safe from the clutches of Bavmorda’s legions of evildoers who will stop at nothing to find the child.

Hot on the heels of his performances in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi and the cult classic Ewok movies, Warwick Davis was tasked with portraying the titular character who went on to be adored by legions of fans around the world. In the years that followed, fans of all ages have continued to plead with the powers that be at Lucasfilm to officially greenlight a sequel and at long last our prayers could soon be answered.

Ron Howard is Developing a Willow Series for Disney+

During an interview with the Happy, Sad, Confused Podcast, director Ron Howard revealed that he is actively in discussion with Lucasfilm about developing Willow as a Disney+ TV series.

There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy. We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool. Fingers crossed.

As if that wouldn’t be enough to elicit a passionate response from the fans, the legendary director also confirmed that the proposed series would be a continuation of the original story and not a reboot. Furthermore, when asked about the participation of Warwick Davis Howard said “Warwick will be in it. Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.”

This is fantastic news. As a fan of the original movie the notion of expanding on the adventures of Willow is an enticing prospect and having the story unfold over the course of 8-12 episodes affords us more than we could have ever hoped for. Jon Kasdan’s work on Solo: A Star Wars Story makes him the perfect choice to write this proposed new series and with Ron Howard attached to the project the series is a shoo-in for success.

Bring it on.
