Netflix‘s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance finally has a release date.
Get ready to mark the date in your calendars because Louis Leterrier’s continuation of Jim Henson’s classic 1982 feature film will launch on Netflix on August 30th. Age of Resistance tells an ambitious new story, set many years before the events of the movie, and realised using classic puppetry with cutting edge visual effects. The ten-episode spectacular will explore the world of Thra created for the original movie and follows three Gelflings – Rian, Brea, and Deet as they discover a terrible truth – the world of Thra is doomed. The Crystal of Truth, located at the heart of Thra and a source of unspeakable power is damaged, corrupted by the evil Skeksis, and sickness begins to spread across the land. When the three Gelfling uncover the horrific truth behind the power of the Skeksis, an adventure unfolds as the spark of rebellion ignites and an epic battle for the planet begins.
Leading the voice cast are Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Nathalie Emmanuel, as Rian, Brea and Deet, three Gelfling heroes. They will be joined by Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Harris Dickinson, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Theo James, Toby Jones, Shazad Latif, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, and Alicia Vikander as other Gelfling kin.
As for the villainous Skeksis: Harvey Fierstein, Mark Hamill, Ralph Ineson, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Simon Pegg, and Andy Samberg will all lend their vocals. Further additions to the cast are Donna Kimball as Aughra, with additional characters being voiced by puppeteers from the production team.
As well as confirming today’s release date, Netflix also unveiled a selection of new images from the series which you can see below.
This new series looks incredible. I have very fond memories of the original movie and recently gave my children in a crash course in Gelfling lore thanks to its accessibility on Netflix. Even though they are now both rebellious teenagers, both were captivated by its majesty, just as I was way back when. If Age of Resistance can capture the magic of Jim Henson’s classic, fans of all ages can look forward to a series of magical journeys for years to come. Like most 80’s kids, I am totally on board!
