The WWE superstar turned actor joins Vin Diesel for the adrenaline-fuelled Fast 9!
The Fast and the Furious franchise has made a name for itself with it’s over the top action, larger than life characters, and nitrous oxide fuelled street racing. Stars like Vin Diesel, the late Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Dwayne Johnson have all frequented the fast lane over the years and now, after months of rumour and speculation, the worst kept secret in Hollywood has finally been confirmed.
Former WWE superstar turned actor John Cena has joined the cast of Fast & Furious 9.
There’s no word on just what type of character John Cena will play, but the actor himself has confirmed he will be portraying a “Bad Ass!” Cena took to his twitter account to say: “For nearly 20 years, the Fast Franchise has entertained fans and created some of the biggest cinematic moments in history. It’s an incredible honour to join this franchise and this family.”
Production on Fast 9 is expected to get underway later this month with Justin Lin returning to the director’s chair. One high profile name not returning for this instalment is Dwayne Johnson. The relationship between “The Rock” and Vin Diesel has been tenuous for some time which has seen the former headlining the franchise spin-off: Fast & Furious Presents Hobbs & Shaw. The spin-off will find Luke Hobbs (Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Statham) being forced to team up in order to take on Brixton (Idris Elba), a genetically engineered super-soldier with cyber enhancements.
Whether or not Cena has the acting chops to pull off such a high-profile role remains to be seen. His recent performance in last year’s Transformers blockbuster Bumblebee was less than stellar, however, if the Fast franchise has taught us one thing over the years it’s that when the cameras start to roll and the action hits its traditionally furious pace anyone can fit into the Fast & Furious universe!
Hobbs & Shaw hits cinemas in August, while Fast 9, with John Cena, will speed onto our screens on May 22nd, 2020.
