Box Office | Angel Has Fallen Wins Slow Box Office Weekend

Gerard Butler protects the #1 spot at the worldwide box office
Hi everyone.
Well, what a week it’s been huh? Let’s recap a bit. Spider-Man left the MCU, though not by choice. Sony and Marvel couldn’t agree on a deal and ended up blaming each other. Disney’s D23 Expo happened and gave us all a great experience with the reveals of the Disney Plus streaming service launching later this year. we got our first looks at the upcoming Black Widow movie, Frozen 2 and more. Lucasfilm gave us some more footage of The Rise Of Skywalker alongside a new teaser poster and then topped off their Disney Plus panel with the trailer for The Mandalorian, details on the Cassian Andor series being filmed next year and to bring an even bigger sense of joy to the masses, ended four years of speculation and denial by FINALLY announcing the long-anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi series and bringing Ewan McGregor to the stage to announce and confirm it. And on top of that, new movies made their bows at the box office although the weekend was a slow one.
Opening at the top of the chart with a take of $21.2million was the third time out for Gerard Butler’s much put upon secret service agent, Mike Banning in ‘Angel Has Fallen‘. The film had a slightly lower budget this time around, $40million against its predecessor ‘London Has Fallen‘ $60million budget. That film went on to gross $62.5million domestically and $205.8million around the world. Critics though didn’t find Butler’s return to be all that exciting, only awarding the violent action flick a 39% average. The film has opened across the globe but those figures are not in just yet so it could be the film has made its money back already. However, the film will need to go all out to match the success of the previous two entries. Perhaps its time for Agent Banning to hang up his gun once and for all.
Dropping down from last weekends top spot, ‘Good Boys‘ lost around 45% of its audience from last week but still managed to grab a nice take of $11.7million to take the second position. The R rated comedy now stands on $42million at the U.S box office and $48.9million across the world against its modest $20million budget.
Another newcomer entered the chart in third place. ‘Overcomer‘, a faith-based film from the director/ Actor/ Writer Alex Kendrick nabbed $8.2million against its costs of $5million. The PG-rated film hasn’t opened in too many markets yet so it will possibly make a lot more when it makes its international bow.
‘The Lion King‘ continued to roar in the fourth position. The Disney live-action remake took another bite of the box office cash and bit off another $8.1million, gaining it a domestic haul of $510.6million and a worldwide gross of $1.5billion against its mammoth $250million budget. Director Jon Favreau has hit another home run after his remake of another Disney property, ‘The Jungle Book‘ a few years back.
‘Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs And Shaw‘ needs its brakes testing as it lost control and slid down to a fifth-place finish with takings of $8.1million. The Dwayne Johnson/ Jason Statham spinoff has now driven off with $147million of domestic moviegoers cash and $588.9million around the world, mainly thanks to a great $102million opening weekend in China. The films box office will probably lead to a sequel for the two leads but all I’ll ask is, next time, get a better script and remember the storylines already existing within the ‘Fast And Furious‘ franchise. And don’t force it next time!
Opening at the sixth position this week was actress Samara Weaving in the new horror movie, ‘Ready Or Not‘. Scaring up a $7.5million opening gambit, the film managed to make the critics jump, earning it an 87% average. Since the film opened last Wednesday, it has managed to take $10.5million against a $6million projected cost. The film has yet to open here in the U.K but I have been hearing great things about it and will line up on the opening weekend to see just how good it really is.
‘The Angry Birds Movie 2‘ lost a fair amount of its flap as it fell to a seventh-placed finish. After its $6.3million weekend, the film currently sits on top of a domestic total of $27million and a worldwide nest egg of $74.6million against its $65million cost.
Guillermo Del Toro and his ‘Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark‘ dropped down to rest in the eighth place. The film managed to hook more audiences in, giving it a $6million weekend and dragging its dead corpse up to $50.4million at the U.S box office and $72million worldwide against a not so frightening $28million budget. I have yet to see the film but it is high on my must-see list. It sounds really enjoyable and, Hey, It is Del Toro after all and he rarely makes a bad movie.
‘Dora And The Lost City Of Gold‘ lost its grip on its swinging vines as it fell down the chart to land at the number nine position with takings of $5.2million. The film version of the Nickelodeon cartoon has now explored its way to $43million domestically and $60.4million worldwide on a budget of $49million. Maybe the kids who grew up with the character have now moved on from her animated exploits and haven’t gone out of their way to see her big-screen debut. But the figures are possibly enough to grant her a second film somewhere down the line.
Rounding out this week’s highest earners comes Quentin Tarantino’s penultimate film, ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood‘ which garnered itself another $5million in box office receipts. The film, which boasts a budget of $90million now proudly sits on a domestic take of $123.1million and $239.8million worldwide.
Sinking out of the chart after a single week in the top ten was ‘47 Meters Down: Uncaged‘ alongside Bruce Springsteen inspired biographical British comedy ‘Blinded By The Light‘ and ‘The Art Of Racing In The Rain‘ which slid off the track and departed.
Opening in limited release, ‘The Peanut Butter Falcon‘ earned itself a $3million weekend. The Shia Lebeouf (Remember him?) and Dakota Fanning cost $6million to produce but has garnered an incredible 95% critical average. Perhaps the world wrote Lebeouf off far too soon. Also opening in limited release was Jillian Bell’s R rated comedy movie ‘Brittany Runs A Marathon‘ which took an impressive $35,000 per-screen average and gained a 88% critical average. Both films should expand over the coming weeks so it may be a good idea to keep an eye on your local listings to see if it comes to your local movie theatre if you want to check either or both films out.
The Summer box office season is almost over for another year. Opening next week is one single movie, the thriller ‘Don’t Let Go‘ starring David Oyelowo. This will close the summer season out.
Now we look forward to the Autumn releases that will be coming our way. Over the next few months, we will be welcoming ‘Rambo: Last Blood‘, ‘Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil‘, ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Ad Astra‘, ‘IT: Chapter II‘, ‘Charlie’s Angels’, ‘Gemini Man‘, ‘Joker‘, ‘Judy‘, ‘Spies In Disguise‘ and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate‘ amongst others. All look enjoyable in their own way and should make for entertaining viewing from September to the start of November. There are five of the above films that I will be queuing up to see on opening day and I’m sure I shall catch the rest when I can. Of course, the films are only a taster and a holding collection for the end of the year when we have the battle between ‘Frozen II‘ and ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker‘. These two films alone will almost certainly dominate the Christmas box office ahead of anything else.
Usually, at this point I would ask what film do you, the readers, think will be on top of the chart next weekend. Instead, now the summer season is almost done, the question I’m asking is, what film or films are YOU personally looking forward to between now and Christmas? What movie is top of your viewing list? Will the battle of Will Smith VS Will Smith in ‘Gemini Man‘ entice you to the local multiplex? Will the nostalgia of the films gone by cause you to visit the movies and see ‘Rambo: Last Blood‘ and ‘Terminator: Dark Fate‘?. Will the period drama of ‘Downton Abbey‘ make you spend your hard-earned cash at the box office? Or will ‘IT: Chapter II‘ float your boat? (I’m sorry but I couldn’t resist that one!).
