Star Wars | Love Seems To Be the Central Theme of 'The Rise of Skywalker'

Annlyel explores the love theme evident in the new D23 Expo footage of The Rise of Skywalker

The D23 Expo Special Look of The Rise of Skywalker was released for the public to see and it wasn’t long before the internet exploded with delighted shock. As I watched the trailer multiple times, tears in my eyes and my heart pounding with exhilaration, I noticed a central theme to the trailer that is both beautiful and enticing at the same time.

Before the fascinating new footage from The Rise of Skywalker, there is a beautiful montage of the previous eight films. There’s different clips of Luke, Leia, and Han throughout the original trilogy, Darth Maul preparing to fight Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, Emperor Palpatine and Mace Windu in an epic standoff, thrilling clips of action scenes, several of the saga’s greatest and most dramatic moments, but when we reach the clips showcasing the Sequel Trilogy what do we see the most of; the companionship between these established characters in the saga.

Leia hugging Han, Kylo and Rey’s fingers about to touch, Rey grabbing Maz’s hand, Han touching Kylo’s face, Rey grabbing Finn’s hand to pull him to his to feet, Luke kissing Leia on the forehead–love is the central theme that the editors of this special look are blatantly trying to convey. And why is that? Because love is what The Rise of Skywalker will be centered around.

As Rose so perfectly said to Finn in The Last Jedi right before she kissed him, “That’s how we’re going to win. Not fighting what we hate. Saving what we love.”

Love is what these heroes are fighting for. Love is what Star Wars has always been about. And love is what will stop the darkness once and for all.
