The Official Film Chart | The UK Top Ten (18th September 2019)

Avengers Endgame claims a fourth week at No.1, surpassing 1 million copies sold since its release. Not even John Wick 3 or Detective Pikachu can challenge Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

Welcome once again to the UK’s top ten best selling Digital download/ Blu-Ray/ DVD chart for the week. We have four new entries on the chart this week including one that enters the chart for the first time since it was released and one that enters the chart after only a single day of release on Digital. Many films are fighting for that coveted number one position, pushing and shoving each other to reach the summit. So with this in mind, let us dive into it once again!

Despite all the pushing and shoving, despite all the swagger of the rest, ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is still staring down at them at the top of the chart as it retains its position for a fourth straight week. The film has easily surpassed the one million copies sold milestone, making it the second film alongside ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘ in the 2019 chart to enter the million-sellers club after only four weeks.

Gunning his way up a place comes Keanu Reeves with John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum‘, shooting into the second position on digital downloads alone. The film hit disc this past Monday so it will be interesting to see if he can oust the Avengers from their lofty heights.

After only one day of the digital release and becoming this week’s highest new entry into the chart comes Sir Elton John Biopic ‘Rocketman‘. Starring the talented Taron Egerton as the famed musician, the film has been much acclaimed and has been mentioned as being a possible Oscar Nominee at next years awards. My opinion is that the best actor nod for Egerton is the least the film deserves. Although it didn’t match the global box office success of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody‘, the film can’t be faulted for it due to the different certificates awarded to the films, thereby cutting down on ‘Rocketman‘s earning potential. Rhapsody gained a 12A certificate, Rocketman a 15 thereby giving it an age bar.

Still hanging around with his balloons and scaring the pants off home viewers in the fourth position is 2017s remake of ‘IT’. Holding onto its sequels recently released coattails, the film is still going strong on the disc and download market.

Dropping down three places to this weeks number five is the live-action version of ‘Pokemon: Detective Pikachu‘. The Ryan Reynolds voiced character has delighted the worlds box office and has repeated its success on the home entertainment market.

Coming into the chart in the sixth position is the biopic ‘Tolkien‘. Starring Nicholas Hoult as the creator of The Lord Of The Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, J.R.R Tolkien and co-starring Lily Collins, the film didn’t make a big splash at the box office worldwide with some critics calling the film ‘Pointless’ and ‘Boring’. However, as the film has now made its bow on the home entertainment scene, maybe its fortunes will change for the better.

Dropping down a place as her retail powers start to wane slightly is ‘Captain Marvel‘. Although she has fallen to the seventh position this week, the Brie Larson starring superhero film does have the honour of being in the $1billion club at the worldwide box office and has repeated her success for the home market.

Coming into the chart for the first time since its September 9th release in the eighth place is the sixth instalment in ‘The Conjuring‘ universe, ‘The Curse Of La Llorona. The film starring Linda Cardellini opened to mixed to negative reviews earlier this year but managed to scare up a nice $122million worldwide box office take against its modest $9million budget.

Dropping two places to a ninth-placed finish, ‘The Hustle‘ had its con tricks seen through. The Anne Hathaway/ Rebel Wilson starring comedy looks like its days are certainly numbered in the chart.

Coming into the chart in the tenth position is the sequel to the 2017 film ‘A Dog’s Purpose‘ entitled  ‘A Dog’s Journey‘. Once again starring Dennis Quaid and the voice of Josh Gad, the film couldn’t match its predecessor at the box office, making $71.7million against the original films take of $205million. The film wasn’t as warmly reviewed this time around and its box office and low home release chart position have been affected by it.

Hitting Digital Download on September 21st is monster sequel ‘Godzilla: King Of The Monsters‘. The Warner Bros. film starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Charles Dance and Millie Bobby Brown made $385.9million around the world upon its release back in May. Although not the box office blockbuster it was expected to be and despite mixed critical reviews, the film will be getting a follow up next summer as ‘Godzilla VS Kong‘ is unleashed at the worlds box office. To be honest, the film isn’t brilliant but is certainly worthy of a watch and adding to your home entertainment collection. And it also serves as an appetizer to next summers main event.
