Bela Lugosi Is Back As Dracula in the All-New Legendary Comic

Legendary, the Lugosi Estate, and Kerry Gammill unite to bring Bela Lugosi’s Dracula back to terrorize a new generation of fans

An eerie silence just fell over the moors of Transylvania…

For me, Bela Lugosi’s Dracula is the definitive version of the character. His chilling performance in 1931 Universal classic was both masterful and elemental and served to solidify his legacy as the ultimate incarnation of Bram Stoker’s Transylvanian bloodsucker.

This is high praise for an actor who only played the part on-screen twice. Of course, Lugosi first played Dracula on a Broadway stage in 1927 and continued playing the character for over 260 shows but it was his inescapable screen presence that captured the hearts of millions of horror fans. Over the years, many actors have tried to emulate his performance and pay homage to his unswerving prowess but Lugosi stands head and shoulders above them all.

The world mourned his loss in 1956, but thanks to a collaboration between Legendary, the Lugosi Estate, and Kerry Gammill Bela Lugosi is about to bring Dracula back to life. The comic book arm of Legendary Entertainment has begun work on the highly anticipated comic book “Bram Stoker’s Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi” – the graphic comic book is expected to be a faithful adaptation of Stoker’s original novel, but will feature Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula. The comic book will feature art by El Garing and art direction by Gammill.

Lugosi’s granddaughter Lynne Lugosi Sparks, CEO of Lugosi LLC, said this about the project:

“Bela Lugosi created his unique portrayal of Count Dracula on the Broadway stage and has become a cultural icon for his performance in the 1931 film. This graphic novel beautifully answers the question: What would Lugosi’s performance look like in a direct interpretation of Bram Stoker’s novel? We believe Legendary Comics has proven what fans already know — Bela Lugosi is Dracula.”

Legendary Comics SVP Robert Napton continued:

“There have been great Dracula graphic novels, but to unite Bram Stoker’s novel in a faithful adaptation with the definitive Dracula in the form of screen icon Bela Lugosi is a dream come true.”

Bram Stoker’s Dracula Starring Bela Lugosi will be one of the comics explored during the “Legendary Comics 2019 and Beyond” panel at the Los Angeles Comic-Con this weekend. The panel will also include updates on a number of other Legendary Comics projects, including The Witches of Silverlake and Lost in Space: Countdown to Danger. Check out the awesome new cover:

This is incredible news. Lugosi’s performance in the 1931 Universal classic was absolutely breathtaking and to me, he IS Dracula. Others have tried to fill his shoes … Christopher Lee, Lon Chaney Jr and Richard Roxburgh being just three of the standout performances, but it is Lugosi horror fans turn to when Halloween season comes calling.

The comic is rumoured to be published sometime in Autumn 2020.

Transylvania is calling … the bats are circling … and Dracula is back to claim more victims!
