Neil Patrick Harris to enter The Matrix with Jada Pinkett-Smith, Jessica Henwick and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II set to follow

The news has started to come out quicker than expected concerning Warner Bros proposed fourth entry in ‘The Matrix‘ saga. Word is leaking out that Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Houser M.D Himself) has signed on the dotted line to play a yet unknown role in the new movie, adding his name to the already confirmed returning Keanu Reeves and Carrie Anne Moss.

The rumour mill is turning pretty fast as more casting news has started to hit the wires. It has been reported that Jada Pinkett-Smith is locked in negotiations to reprise her role from the second and third films, Captain Niobe. If a deal is agreed and she returns, the film will boast three of the original characters from the trilogy and will give the film a welcome boost to its box office fortunes.

It has also been rumoured that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) and Jessica Henwick (TV’S Iron Fist) are in talks to star in the film in undisclosed roles at this time. The whispers say Henwick has performed really well in her auditions and is being considered for the role of a Neo-like new female character in the new film. Mateen II has already been rumoured to be playing a younger version of Laurence Fishburne’s character of Morpheus. Extremely interesting.

For what it’s worth, I’m hoping that Mateen II is playing a different character. I’m not really down with the idea of a younger Morpheus being in the film. Of course, it will be in a flashback sequence but why not bite the bullet and go all out and bring Fishburne back once again? He doesn’t need to be fighting, he could be the new commander of Zion. So far, we have no word on whether Fishburne is being considered to return or if any offer has been made and rejected. But in my eyes, the film would benefit from having all three of the main leads return for this new chapter, even if it’s just a torch-passing exercise. My feelings are that both Trinity and Neo are digital shadows remaining in the Matrix (SPOILER ALERT) seeing as both characters died in the last film, The Matrix Revolutions. But then again, who knows what lurks in the mind of writer/director Lana Wachowski?
