Confirmed | The next Star Wars Movie in 2022 Will Be from David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

The Game of Thrones alumni cites their lucrative Netflix deal and a schedule clash as the reason for departing the galaxy far, far away…

Breaking Star Wars news!

Game of Thrones directors D.B Weiss and David Benioff have officially closed the door on their Star Wars trilogy, at least for the time being. Speaking of time, that was the reason given as to why they are doing so.

In the words of both men, “There are only so many hours in the day and we felt that we could not do justice to both Star Wars and our Netflix projects. So we are regretfully stepping away”. Considering how big the Star Wars franchise is, that must be one big project over on Netflix to not only rival but also beat it.

Considering how theirs was set to be the first film in the post-Skywalker/Jedi era, time will tell how this affects their overall theatrical releases. In the meantime, fan reaction to the news is mixed, but with most being happy for their exit considering how their previous project, Game of Thrones, ended. This is especially so since the creation of their Star Wars trilogy is believed to be the reason why the final season of the until then, highly successful show, was such a flop, to put it politely.

In hindsight, however, this news should not be too surprising considering the deal they had also signed with Netflix. As previously reported, there had originally been a rumor that they were set to direct the trilogy, but there had never been any official confirmation of such. What was certain is that they were slated to write and produce all three films. Over time, this changed to them writing the treatment for all three films and actually writing only the first, then writing/producing the first film only, to being unsure how they would be involved in the next two in the trilogy to this, their ultimate exit from their trilogy altogether.

No matter your opinion on this news, it suddenly puts more pressure on Rian Johnson and his Star Wars trilogy. Likely within the coming days and weeks, as the dust begins to settle from this, hype and speculation for his trilogy will likely increase sharply as fans clamour to know what will come in the post-Skywalker/Jedi era. What will likely happen, is the dates for Rian’s movies will likely get pushed up and take the place of DB Weiss and David Benioff’s. For now, that is complete speculation. Please do not take it as fact.
