Max sinks his teeth into Star Wars: Resistance S2.13 – Breakout
“Breakout” has re-invigorated the magic that Star Wars Resistance seemed to lack in the last two episodes. It was written incredibly well and there was a legitimate sense of surprise and urgency which all Star Wars mediums should have. Kaz and Norath are two Resistance spies and their lack of skills and aptitude were very funny and Kaz really just made things up as he went along. Classic Kazuda Xiono. Yet, when it all comes down to it, his bumbling efforts usually work. Posing as Stormtroopers is perhaps the most overused trope in Star Wars, but for some reason; it was strangely fun for this episode. It really wasn’t their A plan; it was a desperate attempt to come up with a plan.
The real hero of the day was CB-23. She basically did all the rescuing and without her, it is a certainty they’d all be captured. Agent Tierny is particularly cruel in this episode, and I hope she gets hers before the series is over. Pyre as well, but what happened in this episode had me exclaim “HA”. The image of the Colossus hiding in Varkana’s nebula-Esque electrical cloud was absolutely gorgeous and it just reminds me of how much I prefer this animation over the “3D” block animation of Rebels and Clone Wars.
Also, I love meta-references in Star Wars and this one delivered. Innocent, naïve Neeku states “I’ve never seen Stormtrooper armor protect anyone.” How right he is and even though it seems like a major plot problem; at least it’s addressed. A possible in-universe explanation could be that the armor is made poorly to save credits, but I digress. The Iktochi bounty hunter Ax Tegrind looks like an intimidating bruiser (especially with his helmet on), but sadly that is not the case. He has a cool energy axe (hence the name), and some other nice gadgets, but the way they defeat him is kinda pathetic. He actually reminds me of the Jedi Saesee Tiin with his helmet from the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars micro-series; so that’s also a nice throwback.
Besides CB, who is a droid; the character who really impressed me in this episode is Yeager. He was tortured and interrogated by Tierny, and he never broke his resolve. Perhaps, he’s been interrogated before? Not surprisingly after the electroshocks, he had to be helped to walk and Synara who was also tortured did not. This can be accredited to the fact that she is much younger than Yeager. Synara is a very good fighter and to be honest if she faced Axe Tegrind solo in hand-to-hand combat; I’d think she’d win hands down. Ax has brute strength but Synara has excellent footwork.
I love that the producers have kept their word and had the Aces participate more, serving as a make-shift armada for the Colossus. I wouldn’t mind learning about each of their backstories at some point. We got a little of Hype in the Voxx Vortex 5000 and Tora in Rendezvous Point but we need a little bit of Freya, Griff and Bo. Griff would be particularly interesting since he is a former Imperial.
Overall, this episode was very entertaining and revived the stale taste I had in the mouth for Resistance. I’m looking forward to the big finale and I give this episode 86% out of 100. Very nice work!
