Top Five | Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Annlyel makes her case as to why ‘The Duel Of The Fates‘ is the greatest Lightsaber duel in Star Wars history…

Fault The Phantom Menace if you will. Despise Jar Jar Binks for his goofiness. Despise baby Anakin for his childishness. Dislike the story or politics. Not everything about this film will float your boat…but I think it’s safe to say that The Phantom Menace is still the owner of the best lightsaber duel of all time.

Star Wars | Five Reasons to Love the Prequels

Arguments can be made for the climactic lightsaber duels between Anakin and Obi-Wan/Yoda and Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith. There’s Luke and Vader‘s duels in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. The lightsaber duel featuring Rey and Finn taking on Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens was pretty special considering that it gave us a choreography we had never quite seen before. And don’t get me started about that epic duel featuring Rey and Kylo Ren taking on the Praetorian Guards, which, after noticing the several flaws throughout the sequence, has lost a bit of steam. I was hoping The Rise of Skywalker would feature the greatest lightsaber duel of all time. It didn’t.

Kylo Ren and Rey Fight The Praetorian Guards

And so, twenty-one years later, the lightsaber duel between Darth Maul, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Obi-Wan still reigns supreme as the best lightsaber duel of all time. The music, the choreography, the skill sets of every character, there’s something undeniably epic about their duel that has managed to stand the test of time. There are flips and fancy swordplay, tragedy, and justice, but most importantly, and it features three of my favorite characters of the Prequel Trilogy. Can it be topped?

Yes. One day. But for now, I will still watch this duel with a smile on my face and chills down my back.
