Disney’s Condorman

Those of us over a certain age will remember the comedy show ‘Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em’ and in particular, the star of the show, Michael Crawford. His ability to make the whole audience laugh kept families tuning in every week.

With that in mind, Disney came calling and in 1981, produced a spy comedy starring Crawford called ‘Condorman‘. Here, we have a James Bond adventure that is more in line with entertaining children than being a spy caper in the vein of 007. Crawford plays Woody Wilkins, a comic-book writer, and illustrator who insists on trying out some of his creation’s Condorman’s amazing stunts before he draws it up. After a stunt on the Eiffel Tower goes wrong, his friend, C.I.A agent Harry offers him a small adventure in Istanbul in the hope that Woody will get ideas for his next issue. Woody meets Natalya, a K.G.B agent in a Khazbar and pretends to be a top-ranking agent. However, he inadvertently thwarts an attempt on Natalya’s life, something that makes Natalya decide to defect. The only problem? She wants ‘Condorman’ and only him to bring her in.

This leads to a thrilling and comedic film that never outstays its welcome and sees legendary actor Oliver Reed ham it up mercilessly as the villain of the piece. The set pieces are in line with a Bond film without any violence or anything that will concern parents and will give the youngsters an enjoyable few hours and send them off to bed happy.
