Frank Marshall offers an update on the script and new director James Mangold
While it hasn’t been officially confirmed or announced, Producer Frank Marshall dropped the bombshell regarding the status of the fifth movie in the Indiana Jones Franchise. While the fanbase seems to be coming to terms with the shock departure of Steven Spielberg from the director’s chair, Marshall all but confirmed the news that James Mangold (The Wolverine, Logan, Ford Vs Ferarri) will be stepping in to direct Harrison Ford as the titular hero. Marshall spoke highly of Mangold, explaining that he was the right choice to take over the reins, stating:
“His love of the franchise. He’s a wonderful filmmaker. I think he also has a relationship with Harrison. It was all of the right pieces coming together, at the right time”
Steven Spielberg remains onboard the project in a producing capacity, continuing his association with the franchise that started 39 years ago with the classic ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark‘. Marshall also spoke of the current state the script for the new movie was in, stating that “It just started” and of the concern at the moment of exactly when it would be safe to start work on the project, saying:
“The number one thing, obviously, is the safety of everybody – the cast, the crew, and all of us. So, we’re looking at the guidelines that are coming slowly, from the health experts and the studios and the different parts of the business, and we’re just trying to incorporate everything, so we can move forward and be safe. It’s going to obviously slow things down, so we’re trying to adjust. You won’t see a lot of big crowd scenes, for example, for a while. There won’t be any more craft service, so maybe that’ll be good for people, in keeping more fit. It’s a moving target right now. There are a lot of people working on the solutions, to be able to work and be safe”
The film is currently slated for a 2022 release and while I still have my reservations about the project being made without Spielberg on the megaphone duties, it is heartening to hear that James Mangold is such a fan of the franchise, has a good relationship with Harrison Ford and seems to share the vision of both Spielberg and Marshall when it comes to the finished product. If what Marshall says about the qualities Mangold will bring to the table (of which I have little doubt), then Ford’s final go-around as the world’s favorite archaeologist could yet be a fitting end to the characters pursuits.
Indian Jones 5 is due to hit screens worldwide in summer 2022.
