Batwoman Season 2 - Kate Kane Out?

The CW will not recast the role after Ruby Rose‘s departure. Instead, we welcome Ryan Wilder – the new Batwoman!

Just weeks after news emerged that Ruby Rose had vacated her role as Batwoman in The CW’s hit series we are hearing that the network is no longer set to recast the role of Kate Kane. At the time, all statements from the studio confirmed that the search for her replacement had begun in earnest with all things pointing to a straight recasting of the role, however, according to a recently deleted casting call an all-new character is being sought to don the cape and cowl for season two.

Batwoman Season 1

The new character has been identified as Ryan Wilder, who was described in the since-deleted casting notice on Reddit as a woman in her mid-20s who is “about to become Batwoman. She’s likable, messy, a little goofy, and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. An out lesbian. Athletic. Raw. Passionate. Fallible. And very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.

Ruby Rose - Batwoman

This unexpected new direction makes perfect sense for the series. As a character, Kate Kane has become an integral and established entity in The CW Arrowverse following vital roles in the last two multi-series crossover events. And for the sake of continuity, replacing the character is the safest option – and as demonstrated by the fantastic animated adventure Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman, under the veil of anonymity any woman can wear the cowl.

Personally, I shall miss Ruby Rose in the Batsuit. From the outset, she embraced every aspect of the character and worked tirelessly to bring authentic and relevant themes from the LGBTQ community to the mainstream. For that, she deserves praise. Unfortunately, the hectic schedule proved to be too much for the actress to bear and as a result, we can all look forward to welcoming Ryan Wilder into the Batcave!
