Olivia Wilde Spider-Woman 001

Is Spider-Woman About To Join The MCU?

Olivia Wilde reportedly eyeing up directorial duties on Spider-Woman!

Reports are leaking out that writer/director/actress Olivia Wilde has chosen her next project. And it sounds like it could be a massive one! Although unconfirmed at this time, the reports are stating that Ms. Wilde has signed on to direct and develop a movie for Sony that will introduce Spider-Woman to the MCU for the first time on the big screen.

Ms. Wilde is rumored to be co-writing the film alongside her writing partner, Katie Silberman and it is being said that the movie is on the fast track at Sony due to Ms. Wilde’s slate filling up at quite a rapid pace. But if this is true, then it would appear that the chance to bring the character to the screen was too good an opportunity to miss out on. And Sony will have another character to concentrate on in their corner of the MCU alongside Spider-Man, Venom, and Michael Morbius.

Morbius 001

Those who don’t know about the character or her storyline, Spider-Woman started life as the young Jessica Drew who was accidentally exposed to Uranium at a research facility run by her father. In a desperate attempt at saving his beloved daughter, he injected Jessica with an as yet untested serum derived from the blood of several species of uncommon spiders. Jessica was then sealed in a genetic accelerator and was placed into stasis. Jessica was revived and awoken several decades later but was suffering from memory loss, with no idea of who she is and any memories of her past. HYDRA employed her as an assassin but after discovering the true nature of them, she broke free from the organization to forge her own future, thus becoming Spider-Woman. As you would expect, Spider-Woman also exhibits similar traits to Peter Parker and Spider-Man but she does happen to possess a few unique qualities that are exclusive to her which include the famed ‘Venom Blasts’, channeling bio-energy through her body and expelling it through her hands. The character was also played by Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacey at various times throughout the years. However, it has not been revealed which version of the character would be the one that would be brought to the screen.

Sony has quite the catalog of films coming that encompass their collection of MCU characters. Alongside Spider-Man and Venom, they also have ‘Morbius‘ which had to be delayed like ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘ until next year thanks to the coronavirus. Also in development at the studio are movies based on Madame Web, Kraven The Vampire Hunter, Nightwatch, and the often rumored but never made (as yet) version of the Sinister Six. The last time that movie was mentioned was before ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘ underperformed, thus forcing Sony to cancel their plans for an expanded universe based around Andrew Garfield’s portrayal of the character and ending up with them rebooting the franchise with Tom Holland and ‘Loaning’ the character of Spider-Man to Disney for ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ and thus bringing him into the Avengers movies as well as launching his own standalone films.

SpiderMan-Homecoming

I’d love to see the Spider-Woman film actually happen and as I said at the start, it’s been too long in coming. But it sounds like, just like Captain Marvel, that one of the best characters in the Marvel Universe is on her way. To be totally honest, it would be an idea for Sony to work on the film now, get the casting of the character in place and maybe introduce her in next year’s third ‘Spider-Man‘ movie as a surprise and secret cameo. But maybe that’s just wishful thinking on my part. But if Sony and Olivia Wilde can pull it out of the bag, then things may get very (web) sticky in the MCU once more. Bring it on!
