Disney’s latest blockbuster becomes the second big release to premiere on Disney+
One of the last holdouts that held onto a cinematic release date this year has bowed to the inevitable and has gone straight to streaming instead. The animated Disney film ‘Soul‘ has departed from its assigned November 20th release date and has been announced to hit the Disney+ streaming service on Christmas Day, December 25th instead. Rumblings have been heard for weeks that the House of Mouse was considering debuting the film on its streaming service instead of at theatres and now the news has been confirmed. It isn’t that much of a surprise but it represents another film that has been withdrawn from cinemas before it opened. Although the film, like ‘Mulan‘ before it, will open at some stage in theatres where the Disney+ service is not available, it once again is a blow to Disney who held high hopes for the film.
Bob Chapek, the Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company had this to say as he announced the news:
“We are thrilled to share Pixar’s spectacular and moving ‘Soul’ with audiences direct to Disney+ in December. A new original Pixar film is always a special occasion, and this truly heartwarming and humorous story about human connection and finding one’s place in the world will be a treat for families to enjoy together this holiday season”
Adding to these sentiments, the director of the film, Pete Doctor was quoted as saying:
“The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place-but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things. ‘Soul’ investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days. I hope it will bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that”
The film will be available to all Disney+ subscribers at no additional charge, unlike ‘Mulan‘ which came with a $29.99 price tag for exclusive viewing before becoming available to all subscribers from early December included in their monthly subscription. The official synopsis of the film is described as:
‘What is it that makes you…YOU? Pixar Animation Studios’ ‘Soul‘ introduces Joe Gardner (Voice of Jamie Foxx)-a middle-school band teacher who gets the chance of a lifetime to play at the best jazz club in town. But one small misstep takes him from the streets of New York City to The Great Before- a fantastical place where new souls get their personalities, quirks, and interests before they go to Earth. Determined to return to his life, Joe teams up with a precocious soul, 22 (Voice Of Tina Fey), who has never understood the appeal of the human experience. As Joe desperately tries to show 22 what’s great about living, he may just discover the answers to some of life’s important questions.”
‘Soul‘ will tug on your heartstrings when it makes its debut on Disney+ from December 25th, 2020.
