MGM removes Alicia Vikander’s Tomb Raider sequel from the release slate indefinitely
March of 2021 was supposed to be the date when the world got a second helping of Alicia Vikander as the intrepid Lara Croft in a sequel to 2018’s reboot of ‘Tomb Raider‘. Although the film wasn’t that much of a critical success, it did make a decent box office haul to be granted a second go-around for Ms. Vikander. Well, that was the plan anyway when the project was announced back in 2019. But now, Covid-19 has put paid to that idea.
MGM has pulled the film from its announced March 19, 2021 release slot. Why? Because as of this moment, not a single frame of film has been shot! MGM pulling the film isn’t that surprising but what is slightly concerning is that there isn’t a revised release date for the film or any news on whether the film will be made at all. Alicia Vikander was asked about the film recently and even she said that she wasn’t confident that the film would start production until early next year, being quoted as saying:
“The plan was for us to start making one this year, of course, due to the situation, that’s now very different. We’re still in discussions about it, so I hope we can probably get to it next year”
The first film was a modest success at the worldwide box office, earning $274.6million against its budget of $94million but MGM is hoping that the sequel will blow the roof off of the global markets on its way to being a runaway success. But, at the moment, it looks likely that Lara Croft won’t return in the form of Alicia Vikander until at least the summer of 2022 and that’s if it is safe to film next year and/or the project starts work during 2021 at all. At this point, nothing is certain and we all have to sit and wait to see if next year is any better, both cinematically and movie production-wise. Keep those fingers firmly crossed.
