“I know we shot a lot of stuff that didn’t make it into the movie.”
After all the fan clamor for ‘The Snyder Cut‘ of ‘Justice League‘ and the joy and excitement that has accompanied the news that it is not only coming but will run to around four hours in length and new scenes featuring the principal actors were being shot, the attention turned to a possible different cut for David Ayer’s ‘Suicide Squad‘. Ayer himself has stated on many occasions that his film ‘got the Edward Scissorhands treatment‘ at the hands of Warner Bros. executives, leaving quite a lot of shot footage on the cutting room floor and leading to the release of a version of the film that Ayer didn’t sign off on or that he wanted to release.
Although Ayer has said that it would be easy to complete his version of the film as the footage is still available, he has also denied reports that he would be given the same chance as Zack Snyder has been afforded and to complete his vision of the film to be released on HBO MAX. But interest remains strong for the director to be allowed to complete the film and fan support is strong with many DC fans to bring Ayer’s cut to the masses.
The film is also the first time Margot Robbie played the role of Harley Quinn, to huge fan acclaim and has led the young actress to play her twice more to date in this years ‘Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn‘ and next summers sequel ‘The Suicide Squad‘. Although Ms. Robbie sounds like she HASN’T been filming scenes as the character for Snyder’s ‘Justice League‘ despite what the rumors have been saying, she has said she would be interested in seeing Ayer’s cut of ‘Suicide Squad‘:
“I never saw the Ayer cut. I know we shot a lot of stuff that didn’t make it into the movie. I would be very curious myself”
It is common knowledge that many of Jared Leto‘s scenes as the Joker were cut from the film, a fact that the actor isn’t shy about telling people but when she was informed that Leto had been back on the set of ‘Justice League‘ to film new scenes as the crown prince of crime, Ms. Robbie answered “Really? I didn’t know that. Cool”. This simple answer pours cold water on reports that both she and Leto would be making appearances in the completed film from Snyder but gives the fans something else to hold onto. To be honest, I believe that we will be treated to the Ayer cut of ‘Suicide Squad‘ but only after ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘ has been completed and transmitted on HBO MAX and shown in movie theatres around the world and after the final numbers have been tallied and counted.
If the film is a success, which I believe it will be, then Warner Bros. MAY take the plunge and let Ayer loose on completing his version of the film. The clamor for it is there, the fan support is there and if the box office draw for Snyder’s movie is there as it should be, then there isn’t anything to hold Warner Bros. back. Considering ‘The Suicide Squad‘ is rumored to be rated R as was ‘Birds Of Prey‘, then an R rated version of ‘Suicide Squad‘ could be completely worthwhile. All eyes and hopes now rest on Zack Snyder and his completed vision of his film.
