David Gordon Green To Helm New Sequel To 'The Exorcist'?

David Gordon Green is in talks to direct a long-awaited sequel to one of the greatest horror films of our time

Can there be a legitimate sequel to The Exorcist?

David Gordon Green, two years ago, brought back Michael Myers and the ‘Halloween‘ franchise from the brink. And what a job he did. He not only made Myers scary again but he gave the world and in particular, the fans, a Halloween movie for the ages, making the franchise popular again and making a different but worthy follow-up to the John Carpenter original, forty years later. He reinvigorated the franchise by creating a film that paid homage to its source material while taking the story in a new direction. We should have seen his follow-up to the film, ‘Halloween Kills‘ this past October but circumstances forced the film back by a year. Any horror film that Green decides to helm in the future will have my full support behind him. But if the rumors are to be believed, then he may have just decided to helm a sequel to what is considered to be one of the greatest horror films of them all.

Sequel

It was already speculated that the world would be seeing a remake of the classic horror film from the 1970s, ‘The Exorcist‘. However, it is now being reported that not only is Morgan Creek Entertainment proceeding forward with the film but Blumhouse Productions has joined up with them to make the movie and David Gordon Green is in talks to direct the new film. Now, in the same vein as when they managed to talk Jamie Lee Curtis into reprising her role of Laurie Strode in the new ‘Halloween‘ trilogy, it could be that somewhere in the middle of the film that we get to see original stars Ellen Burstyn and Linda Blair reprise their roles from the original film if they desire to go in that direction.

The Exorcist, David Gordon Green, reboot

Now that the film has been confirmed as a sequel and NOT, thankfully a remake of the original film, then the makers can go in any direction they desire. I can get behind the film and champion it now. If it had turned out to be a remake, then I most certainly would have been dead set against it. But I believe that if anyone can pull the sequel off then the team of Jason Blum and David Gordon Green are most certainly it. And, if it turns out to be true, then I will be interested in seeing what they can come up with.

In the meantime, ‘Halloween Kills‘ opens October 15th, 2021.
