The Official Charts - Bill And Ted Face The Music

The Official Film Chart | The UK Top Ten (20th January)

This week on the Official Film Chart – The New Mutants drops to 3rd, inversion propels Tenet back into 2nd, but nothing can stop the awesomeness of Bill And Ted Face The Music!

It’s all change on the Official Film Chart this week!

“It was beauty killed the beast”. Those immortal words, first uttered in the original 1933 black and white classic version of ‘King Kong‘ remains one of the most heartwrenching statements ever.

KING KONG

Why I hear you ask? Simple. I love King Kong right up until his tragic demise at the end of the film. That statement, being the final words spoken in the film, never ceases to make me either well up with tears or have a huge lump in my throat. Kong has been remade several times. The best being Peter Jackson’s 2005 epic version but nothing can come close to that black and white original with a stop-motion animation Kong and various other monsters on show.

The reason I mention this and use that classic statement as this week’s opening is that the final film in the ‘Monsterverse’ that Warner Bros has created, ‘Godzilla Vs Kong‘ has moved its release forward by two months. Instead of opening in May where it was dumped after being delayed thanks to the pandemic, it will now open at the end of March, in the U.S.A at least.

GODZILLA VS KONG

While it could be seen as good news, there lies a problem. The UK government predicts that lockdown procedures will start to be eased in April. That doesn’t guarantee that the cinemas will reopen at the same time and even if they did, social distancing will still be in effect. Cineworld for one may choose not to reopen until they can admit more patrons to their screens and that means July at the earliest.

It sadly looks like we are in for yet another year of either delay. Or streaming debuts instead of being able to see the films on the big screen. ‘Godzilla Vs Kong‘, like several others, needs to be seen on the biggest screen you can find. So we can appreciate the film in all its glory, just as it deserves. But I have to predict that the film will become available over here on the PVOD market as a 48 hour rental for £15,99. The same as ‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ recently did.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

Welcome once more to the official top ten countdowns of what we have all been buying during the past seven days. Once again, we have resorted to old favorites to see us through the dark and somewhat boring times. This week sees only one re-entry into the chart. To make way for this title, again we need to make room and with much regret, we bid goodbye this week to ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald‘.

But what title occupies the coveted number one position? Hold onto your butts as we make our way through the Official Film Chart.

FOTF TV

It is truly a bodacious day! Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter have decided that they didn’t like being in the bronze position last week. And as such, ‘Bill And Ted Face The Music‘ has leaped into the time-traveling phone box and has landed itself at the top of the chart.

The third film featuring the characters managed to gain a cinematic release back in September of last year. Almost thirty years after the second film was released. The low budget threequel managed to make itself an excellent profit and has led to fans calling for a fourth film. Considering the time lapse between the second and third films, they could be in for a long wait!

INVERSION THERAPY

Holding itself steady in the second position, Christopher Nolan’s time-bending and terrific action thriller ‘Tenet‘ continues to entertain the British public with its visuals and mind-bending action and plot.

The film was one of the only big-budget films to open after lockdown restrictions were eased back in August of 2020. And although it sold out screens across the country, social distancing rules reduced audiences and led to the film making a lot less money than it could have made.

The New Mutants‘ find that their powers have waned slightly as they drop two places from last week’s number one to become this week’s third best-selling title. The final movie in 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men‘ franchise, the film opened in September to rotten reviews but fairly good box office returns. Despite sitting on the shelf for two years, the film managed to garner enough interest to make a profit.

SPIDER SENSE

Speaking of films that ended certain things. The final film in Marvel’s fourth phase of movies, ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home‘ has managed to swing up the charts once again. This week landing and webbing itself into the fourth position in the chart, a rise of two places.

Tom Holland’s second solo effort in the title role continues to sell well on the home entertainment formats. Almost two years after its cinematic release ahead of the third film which is currently filming and is due for release next December.

THE TOP FIVE

Rounding out the top five titles for the week, the remake of Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches‘ continues to cast a spell on the chart despite slipping a place from last week’s fourth position. Despite the film bypassing cinema screens and going straight to PVOD in many countries, including here in the UK, the film has managed to sell well. And continues to provide decent family entertainment.

COMING SOON

Hitting download and keep from Monday 25th of January, ‘Cats And Dogs 3: Paws Unite!‘ decides to scamper in. The original film made its debut all the way back in 2001 and led to a sequel a few years later. Now, we see a third film belatedly coming to rent and/or own. I have no idea what its plotline is this time around. But I can guess that it will feature more hijinks from the cute and cuddly (not to mention psychopathic) pets. It should be a good little time-waster for the little ones if you think they will enjoy it.

BACK IN ACTION

We return to the top ten with our sixth-placed title. And once again, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence have locked and loaded as those ‘Bad Boys For Life‘ have risen up the chart once again, this time by a single place.

Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron have once again hit the right notes as ‘The Greatest Showman‘ sees its fortunes boosted by rising three places to end the week in the seventh spot on the chart.

Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart have come off of pause and have risen a single place up the rankings as ‘Jumanji: The Next Level‘ becomes this week’s number eight on the chart.

Greta Gerwig’s wonderful adaptation of ‘Little Women‘ takes a slight tumble this week, dropping one place to end the week in the ninth-placed position.

And finally, after refueling, a tire change, and a spell on the sidelines, ‘Le Mans ’66‘ re-enters the chart race as it rises seven places from last week’s number seventeen to become this week’s tenth and final title on the chart.
