Comic Book Review | Future State: Superman Vs. Imperious Lex

Steve reviews another title from DC’s Future State series. If you are a Superman fan, then Superman vs Imperious Lex is a story well worth your reading.
Superman vs Imperious Lex is another entry into DC’s Future State project. This was another book in the line that I had some low expectations of. I had not originally planned on reading this one in the first place. But I decided to go ahead and give it a try. I am happy that I made that decision.
Superman Vs. Imperious Lex | DC Comics
The Superman in this story is the real Superman, that is, Clark Kent, albeit a much older Clark Kent. My point being it is the Superman we know as Superman and not his son, who is Superman in some other DC Future State titles.
PLANET LEX
The future presented to us in Superman Vs. Imperious Lex is not nearly as gloomy as it is in some of the other Future State books. In this future, there is a sort of intergalactic United Nations. The story begins in the newly constructed chambers of this galactic organization. The delegation is debating over new membership, specifically the membership of a planet ruled by Lex Luthor. At this point, Superman enters the chambers and tells a story of said planet.
What I disliked about the book is that we didn’t get much of a stage set about Lex Luthor himself. Specifically, how in the world did he become the ruler of a planet? Why did he leave Earth in the first place? I mean, we know it had something to do with Superman but how about some sort of flashback to that period to at least give us a peek?
A REAL SUPERMAN
What I liked about it is that I really believe that writer Mark Russell gets Superman. In this book, he shows that Superman has the greater good in mind and is not beholden to grudges or biased against the people of a planet that happens to be ruled by his arch-nemesis. This is a Superman that understands the needs of the people of the said planet. And he puts those needs ahead of his disdain for a horrible human being that rules those people.
VERDICT
Although I am looking forward to reading the new Superman comics when Superman: Worlds of War writer Phillip K. Johnson takes over the titles, I certainly wouldn’t mind if DC lets Russell take a crack and writing some Superman stories as well.
If you are a Superman fan, then Superman vs Imperious Lex is a story well worth your reading.
