Lucasfilm has officially distanced itself from Gina Carano and issues a statement calling her posts on social media “Abhorrent”
Lucasfilm has removed Gina Carano from its future plans. The studio behind ‘The Mandalorian‘ took the action after the actress posted several controversial messages to her social media pages. The outcry that followed the posts quickly gained traction, leading to the company releasing this statement:
“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable”
Although this isn’t the first time that Carano has been called out on her social media posts, a post comparing the divided political climate to Nazi Germany is the straw that has broken the camel’s back. Other posts on her social media profiles also gained a backlash but her Nazi Germany post is thought to be the one that has caused her dismissal. Although the posts were deleted, many people managed to get a screenshot of the offending posts and publish them on social media.
“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views,” she wrote.
Carano and her supporters attempted to get the hashtag #Weloveginacarano trending but the damage was already too severe for her to recover from.
Gina Carano was on the verge of gaining her own ‘Star Wars‘ series back as far as last November. And an announcement was expected at the Disney Investor Day. But yet again, a social media post by the actress seemed to have made the executives hold off on the announcement. Now, the actress has lost a golden opportunity to establish herself in the ‘Star Wars‘ universe.
Thoughts will now turn to how to manage her departure from ‘The Mandalorian‘. It could be handled by having Cara Dune leave on her own personal mission and never re-appear. Or they could kill off the character off-screen. Or perhaps they are considering recasting the role. All roads for the writers and creators of the show remain firmly open. But we can assume no announcement will be forthcoming until the dust has settled.
We will keep you informed of any further developments regarding the show and Cara Dune when they become available.
