WandaVision director Matt Shakman fears that fans may be disappointed with the series finale
Over the past eight weeks, we have been treated to an exceptional show in Disney+’s WANDAVISION. Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany have reclaimed our hearts as a pair. And the world has finally seen Elizabeth Olsen’s full acting range. The young actress has been awarded plaudits which have been too long in coming her way. With excellent support from Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness, the series has been enjoyable from the start.
Ahead of the finale this Friday (it could be a one-season wonder according to Kevin Feige), the fan theories have kicked into overdrive. We already know that the finale will tie into the currently filming ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness‘. Fans have been speculating that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme will almost certainly make an appearance during the finale.
Others have speculated that the finale could yet tie into the rebooted ‘X-Men‘ franchise. Evan Peters’ appearance as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver from the now-defunct Fox franchise has fuelled speculation that Patrick Stewart will appear as ‘Professor X’. Or maybe Ian McKellan will appear as Magneto. These cannot be ruled out.
There’s even been speculation that Paul Rudd could appear as ‘Ant-Man’. Or even Brie Larson will fly in as ‘Captain Marvel’ thanks to characters from their movies appearing in the show. I’ve even heard theories that Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth will appear as Jane Foster and Thor respectively. But I would seriously doubt these appearances.
However, the director of the show, Matt Shakman has poured cold water on the fan’s hopes for the finale. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Shakman was hopeful about how fans would view the finale. But did admit that some would invariably be left disappointed:
“I hope that they feel like the journey was satisfying for them. I know there are so many theories out there; there will be a lot of people who will no doubt be disappointed by one theory or another. But we’re always telling this story about Wanda dealing with grief and learning how to accept that loss, and hopefully, people will find that the finale is surprising but also satisfying and that it feels inevitable because it’s the same story they’ve been watching the whole time.”
Shakman also spoke fondly of his time behind the camera on the show and his time playing within the Marvel Universe sandbox:
“The challenge as a director was unique. I’ll never have a job like this again. This was the job of a lifetime, to be able to draw on all of those different skill sets. But what does hold it all together is that it has a big heart. It’s a love story, it’s a story of loss, and I think that resonates even more in this crazy pandemic that we’re all trying to survive right now. I think we can all understand where Wanda’s coming from, so it helps it to resonate a little bit more.”
So, could the fans be about to be let down by the finale of the show? It sounds like some could be underwhelmed by what is about to be revealed. But by the same token, does any fan have the right to be disappointed about what will happen? Not in the slightest. What they have been given is a wonderful and highly emotional and enjoyable show that has given them a cinematic experience from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the comfort of their own homes. They have built up their expectations to such a high degree that they will possibly find their high hopes are just that. A speculated dream.
I am in little doubt that the finale MAY split the fans down the middle. But I believe that the finale will be one to savor. Will there be a surprise cameo in it? Almost certainly yes. Who will it be? I’m sticking with my guess of it being Doctor Strange. As it will lead into his new movie which also stars Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda. But will there be a massive surprise that will blow everyone’s minds? I wouldn’t put it past them, to be honest. After all, ‘The Mandalorian‘, blew the minds of fans at the end of the second season by giving the fans a cameo from Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. Could ‘WandaVision‘ go out in the same way and style like that?
We will all find out exactly what is true and what is a theory when the finale of ‘WandaVision‘ drops on Disney+ this Friday.
