Lace-up your boots and dust off your gloves. Michael B. Jordan is stepping back into the ring -and the director’s chair for CREED III
Great news for fans of the ‘Creed‘ franchise. It has been announced by MGM that a third film will be coming to theatres. And actor Michael B. Jordan has been confirmed as being the director of the film after rumors abounded regarding the possibility.
The new film will be scripted by Keenan Coogler and Zack Baylin which is based on an outline by Ryan Coogler, who is Keenan Coogler’s brother. Ryan Coogler also directed the first ‘Creed‘ film and has a great track record. Franchise Producer Irwin Winkler was quoted as saying back in 2019 that he:
“Promised Michael B. Jordan that he’d get his chance to direct Creed III. Last year in a conversation with our Creed star Michael B. Jordan, I offered him the opportunity to not only star in, but also to direct Creed III”
Michael B. Jordan himself had this to say in a statement:
“Directing has always been an aspiration, but the timing had to be right. ‘Creed III’ is that moment — a time in my life where I’ve grown more sure of who I am, holding agency in my own story, maturing personally, growing professionally, and learning from the greats like Ryan Coogler, most recently Denzel Washington, and other top tier directors I respect. All of which sets the table for this moment. This franchise and in particular the themes of ‘Creed III’ are deeply personal to me. I look forward to sharing the next chapter of Adonis Creed’s story with the awesome responsibility of being its director and namesake.”
Ryan Coogler himself chipped in on the project, saying:
“The films of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky franchise have always been important to me and my family. It was an honor to help bring the Creed franchise to life with Sly, Michael, Tessa, Irwin, and all the creative parties involved. I couldn’t be more thrilled to see Mike in the director’s chair on the third installment. The team at Proximity and I are excited about the story Keenan and Zach have crafted and can’t wait to help bring it to life.”
Jordan will also be a producer of the film alongside directing and acting as Adonis Creed. Also joining him will be Tessa Thompson as Adonis’ fiance Bianca alongside Phylicia Rashad as Mary Anne Creed. But one name that’s missing so far is of ‘Rocky‘ creator Sylvester Stallone. It is unknown if Stallone will once more be reprising his role as Rocky Balboa in the film, even if only for a cameo. After ‘Creed II‘, Stallone said it would be his final appearance as his iconic character but a film without him wouldn’t feel right.
Whether Stallone signs on again remains to be seen. But regardless of his participation, ‘Creed III‘ will be hitting theatres on November 23, 2022.
