The John Wick sequels reportedly won’t be shooting back to back as Derek Kolstad confirms he will not be returning for the sequels
I love ‘John Wick‘ movies. There’s something special about watching Keanu Reeves take on all comers for two hours. When it was announced last year that two new sequels were on their way, I was delighted. And to hear they were filming back to back and would be released a year apart, It sounded like we were in for another great ride. But things have suddenly changed.
It is being rumored that only ‘John Wick 4‘ will be filming this year and that ‘John Wick 5‘ is off the schedule. Much like the ‘Mission: Impossible 7 & 8‘ suddenly only filming the 7th film, it sounds like our favorite dog-loving assassin is only getting one film. Actor Ian Mcshane, who plays the character of Winston mentioned something earlier in the year:
“Keanu [Reeves] and I exchanged New Year’s greetings and said, ‘Hope to see you this year. I know the script is being written and they’re hoping to do it this year. I know they announced they were gonna do [‘John Wick 4’] and [‘John Wick 5’] together, but who knows. The studios announce all sorts of things. No doubt, at some point this year, we’re gonna do ‘John Wick 4’.”
Production of the fourth film is scheduled to kick off shooting in Paris and Berlin before moving to Japan and New York City sometime this year, possibly around June. But the fifth film will not be shooting at all this year.
Also, the writer and creator of the franchise, Derek Kolstad is NOT returning for the new film(s). And in a strange twist, he insists it wasn’t his decision to not work on the continuing franchise:
“It wasn’t my decision. When you think of the contractually of these things, the third one I shared the credit with any number of people, they didn’t have to come back to me, and so they didn’t. And so you look at that and you could be hurt, and I would say if I was 20 years ago I would have been, but seeing what the industry is and how things go, I just believe that you bless everything and hope it all the best, and to the players involved who are doing other things elsewhere. And yeah, it’s personal, so I’m never going to talk shit about John Wick. I want this thing to survive and thrive.”
Very strange goings-on indeed. To be fair, COVID has played a huge part in derailing a lot of Hollywood’s plans for their movies. It could be a case of seeing how things go with regards to the fifth film in the saga. But the removal of Kolstad, who has been the driving force from the beginning, is a mistake in my eyes. Why remove one of the people who made the franchise so successful? One of the only people who know Wick inside and out apart from Keanu Reeves? Is the franchise in trouble somehow?
We will keep you informed of any developments in this story but for now, ‘John Wick: Chapter 4‘ will shoot its way into theatres on May 27th, 2022.
