With all the new characters emerging in the MCU – is the time right for a Young Avengers mini-series on Disney Plus?
Could a Young Avengers series be coming to Disney Plus?
Everyone knows The Avengers. They’re the first team of superheroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that take on the likes of gods, aliens, robots, and whatever other madness may need their help. But we don’t know about the Young Avengers. A squad of equally awesome teenage (or young adult) superheroes ready to save the world too.
The Young Avengers are a recent fan favorite featuring a bunch of new heroes defining their legacies in the comic book and animated world. But now it’s very clear that the MCU is slowly (but rapidly) building the Young Avengers storyline before our eyes.
So far we’ve got eight characters already getting ready to be established or are already established in the MCU.
Scott Lang’s daughter who has now, thanks to the Blip, grown into a teenager and will be even older by the time of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania where she will be played by actress Kathyrn Newton. Cassie Lang becomes the superhero Stature in the comics and can shrink and grow in size due to emotion (she shrinks when she feels guilty and she gets larger when angry.) Whether she’ll get her powers in the MCU this way remains to be seen. But Marvel has been building her eventual superhero collaboration with her father for years and it’s going to be quite a moment.
Billy and Tommy a.k.a Wiccan and Speed
Just recently established in WandaVision we got to see Wanda not only have children but we also got to see those children become brief superheroes with their classic powers on full display. We know they’ll be returning in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness thanks to a post-credits scene at the very end of the series but when will they become teenagers and assume their true superhero stories? Maybe in a future story. We’ll have to see.
Hawkeye (Kate Bishop)
Marvel Studios is currently developing Hawkeye, the show that will most likely see Clint Barton give up the mantle of Hawkeye to his new prodigy, Kate Bishop. Played by Hailee Steinfeld, I already know that I’m going to love the MCU version of Kate.
Iman Vellani is playing the title role of Ms. Marvel in a series that we will most likely be getting early next year at some point considering that it’s still filming at this point. Ms. Marvel is one of my favorite Marvel characters. And I absolutely cannot wait to see how she is introduced and incorporated into this fantastic franchise.
Actress Dominique Thorne is set to play Riri Williams, a brilliant teenager who ends up building her suit and becoming Ironheart, thus continuing Iron Man’s legacy.
Elijah “Eli” Bradley a.k.a my favorite member of the Young Avengers, Patriot, just made his MCU debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Played by newcomer Elijah Richardson. With a tease like this, we’ll likely be seeing young Richardson again in the future, and maybe next time, he’ll be getting ready to suit up as Patriot.
America Chavez a.k.a Miss America
Xochitl Gomez will be making her MCU debut when she plays America Chavez in next year’s highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Miss America is one of the leading members of the Young Avengers, making her debut all the more exciting.
All in all, the MCU has a LOT of characters and that number is rapidly growing. With these youngsters joining the party over the next few years the idea of a Young Avengers movie seems probable. But here’s the thing. To the general audience, a Young Avengers film may not seem like something worth watching. But to the Disney+ audience, it could be a remarkable event. Instead of getting a movie, however, we could get like a four-part Young Avengers series. Featuring these characters and their fight against whatever extraordinary villain in a story would be so, so very interesting.
And that allows the MCU to keep their Avengers movies and eventual X-Men ensemble films relegated to the theaters. While the Young Avengers will dominate Disney+. It’s a brilliant strategy and I hope Marvel Studios is listening.😁
Basically…I’m really excited!
