Bad news DC fans. Warner Bros. has dragged The Trench and New Gods back into the depths and put them back on the shelf

When you think of Warner Bros. canceling two of their in-development DC films, you start to get concerned. Is ‘The Flash‘ not going to happen? Is ‘Wonder Woman 3‘ off the radar? Has ‘The Batman‘ been declared not fit to fly? None of which are true. But Warners has decided not to move forward with two DC movie projects.

The films in question are Ava DuVernay’s ‘New Gods‘ and the ‘Aquaman‘ spin-off, the horror film ‘The Trench‘. In a statement, Warner Bros. and DC are quoted as saying:

“As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including New Gods and The Trench will not be moving forward. We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan, and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future.”

The Trench

Warner Bros. decided that there was no space for the two films and promptly canceled them. Where ‘New Gods‘ was concerned, the project had been redevelopment since 2018. ‘The Trench‘ was announced after ‘Aquaman‘ hit it big at the box office.  The film would have concentrated on the aquatic monsters seen in Jason Momoa’s solo outing. Whereas ‘New Gods‘ faced a problem as the big bad in the story was Darkseid, who recently was the villain in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’

MULTIVERSE

This would have caused a major headache for the filmmakers and the DC universe in general. ‘The Batman‘ is set on an alternate Earth named Earth-2 and will be its own thing. ‘The Flash‘ though will be setting up future films and TV shows to share the same universe. Also, Ezra Miller and Ben Affleck will be reprising their roles as The Flash and Batman respectively. This will tie into the universe that Zack Snyder, Patty Jenkins, and James Wan among others have created.

Five Reasons why Aquaman is the perfect DCEU movie

It isn’t all bad news though. Both ‘New Gods‘ and ‘The Trench‘ could be revisited and revived further down the road. Also, ‘Aquaman 2‘ is gearing up for filming later this year. Jason Momoa will return as the title character and Amber Heard is also expected to return as Mera. Patrick Wilson and Willem Dafoe should also be back once again as Om and Vulko.

DC FILMS

Other scheduled DC projects include ‘Black Adam‘, ‘Shazam! Fury Of The Gods‘, ‘Supergirl‘, ‘Green Lantern Corps‘, ‘Batgirl‘, ‘Blue Beetle‘ and ‘Static Shock.’  ‘Wonder Woman 3‘ and a new ‘Superman‘ are also in the works. That’s not including ‘The Suicide Squad‘ which is due out in August. Or the rumored Margot Robbie/ James Gunn ‘Harley Quinn‘ solo movie. And the long-rumored ‘Gotham City Sirens‘.

Sadly though, ‘New Gods‘ and ‘The Trench‘ seem to have missed the party.
