Dune, Cry Macho, and The Many Saints Of Newark shift their release slots again!
We all thought the release date merry-go-round was over! Not so. News has broken that Warner Bros. has spun the wheel again and has shifted three of its movies. However, when it comes to one, you can actually understand the studios thinking behind the delay.
That film is Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Dune’. The big-screen remake of the classic Frank Herbert novel has already been delayed from last Christmas until October of this year. Now, ahead of the film’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Warner Bros. has decided to delay the film until October 22nd. The main reason for the film being delayed is because of Legendary Pictures. And James Bond 007.
Legendary put up 75% of the budget for ‘Dune’ and wants to steer well clear of the often-delayed new 007 film ‘No Time To Die.’ If ‘Dune’ was to release as scheduled, it would be in direct competition to Daniel Craig’s final appearance as the secret agent. And Bond will completely rule the box office when it opens, leaving the rest of the releases in the dust.
THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK
Another film that is moving back is the Alan Taylor-directed feature film prequel to ‘The Sopranos’. Moving out of its September 24th slot, ‘The Many Saints Of Newark’ will now make its bones in theatres from October 1st instead. Written by Lawrence Konner and the creator of the original series, David Chase, the film is set in the 1960s and 1970s in Newark, New Jersey. The 1967 riots in the city are the backdrop to tensions between Italian-American and African-American communities in the film.
CRY MACHO MOVES FORWARD!
The final film that is shifting positions is the Clint Eastwood film ‘Cry Macho’. However, the film is actually moving forward from October 22nd to September 17th instead. Directed by Eastwood, the film is a moving drama. The film involves a washed-up horse breeder and Rodeo star (Eastwood) who loses his wife and child. As a result, he sinks into alcoholism. However, after taking a job from his ex-boss to bring a young man home from Mexico to the United States, he finds redemption. On the way from taking the young man away from his alcoholic mother and returning him to his father, he teaches the youngster about what it means to be a good man.
GET THE PENCIL AND ERASER OUT AGAIN!
These dates have now been penciled into the diaries at the studio. However, knowing what has been happening over the past year, if you mark the new dates on your calendar, keep an eraser handy. You’d best write them down in pencil as nothing can be confirmed 100% yet. They or other movies may decide to move again. It’s now in the lap of the movie gods once again.
