Mortal Kombat Official Film Chart

This week on the official chart, Space Jam slam dunks its way in, and Godzilla and Kong are defeated as Mortal Kombat delivers a fatality to the rest of the chart!

Welcome to the Official Film Chart.

LOKI CONCLUDES ON A CLIFFHANGER!

Did you watch the Disney+ series ‘Loki’? Did you enjoy it as much as I and the rest of the team did? I certainly hope so. The past six weeks have given us an exemplary show of top-quality writing and acting. And a second season IS COMING! Tom Hiddleston and Sophia Di Martino together have been completely brilliant as Loki and Sylvie respectively. Their partnership has brought joy throughout the series and it looks as if it will continue.

With terrific support from Owen Wilson as Mobius; as well as great guest appearances from Richard E. Grant as Classic Loki. Alongside an uncredited appearance from Jaimie Alexander, returning finally as Lady Sif, the show has been worth watching. And as for the cliffhanger ending…anything is now possible. Loki will return with Glorious Purpose!

BLACK WIDOW BLOWS THE BOX OFFICE APART!

Finally! After what seems to be an eternity, ‘Black Widow‘ has reached screens worldwide. Whether it was watched at the cinema or on Disney+ Premier Access for £19.99, the film has hit big. As of Sunday night, the film has made $219.2million globally. This has given it the biggest opening since COVID began. The swansong for Scarlett Johansson as the character has certainly found its market. Despite being available to watch at home as well as cinematically. This will probably drag its box office down but Disney is over the moon with its performance so far. I have yet to see it for myself (I’m going to the cinema to see it) but other members of Team FOTF have and are unanimous in their praise of the film.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

The chart this week sees three new titles join us. They are familiar titles but are welcome, just the same. Two of them are the original films that see sequels launched this weekend at the cinema. The third, well, let’s just say it is interesting to see it! Making way for these three newcomers are ‘Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory’, ‘Batman: The Long Halloween: Part 1‘, and ‘Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw‘. But can anyone defeat Godzilla and Kong to become the new top ten chart champ? Time to find out.

Official Film Chart

MORTAL KOMBAT DEFEATS THEM ALL!

The titans have fallen! After hitting the chart last week in the second position on digital downloads alone, our new number one is ‘Mortal Kombat‘. The reboot of the classic videogame and remake of the movies from the 1990s has seen 82% of its total sales coming on the disc formats. A much more violent, gory, and nasty version of the property, the film finally gives the fans the film version they wanted. Instead of being a family-friendly affair like the 1990s versions, this is adults-only stuff. Released now, the older movies would get a 12A rating. This version more than earns its 15 certificate. And that’s what makes it that much better.

GODZILLA AND KONG FINALLY FALL!

They have held the top spot for four whole weeks. But their time at the summit has come to an end. Falling a single place to continue their fight from the second position is ‘Godzilla vs Kong‘. The titanic smackdown between two of cinemas’ greatest ever monsters continues to enjoy great success on home entertainment. Not too bad for a film that only became available here in the UK on PVOD. It did manage to snag a cinematic run once the multiplexes reopened. But most people had already seen it at home. But the film has made its money on all forms of home entertainment and is still available to grab in a triple set on all formats.

THE LEAGUE HOLD FIRM!

My personal favorite film of 2021 so far hangs in there in third place. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and the rest are still selling well in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’ A triumph for all the fans that wanted to see Snyder’s version of the film released. The four-hour opus is one of the best superhero movies of all time. More intense, more storyline, more action and adventure, and more violent than the 2017 version; this is what home cinemas and IMAX were made for. It is sad to know that the film won’t get a continuation but we can be happy we got this definitive version once and for all.

SPACE JAM SLAM DUNKS ITS WAY INTO THE CHART!

Hitting the chart for the first time ever is the 1996 live-action/animated film ‘Space Jam‘. The film, featuring Michael Jordan alongside our favorite Looney Tunes, has hit the chart thanks to a new 4K UHD release. Fans of the film have been lapping it up ahead of this weekend and the release of a belated sequel ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy‘. No Jordan this time. Instead, we have LeBron James in the lead role. But fans of this original movie (of which, I am one), can once again laugh themselves silly at the antics of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the members of the Tune Squad. And who can forget Bill Murray and his hilarious performance in the film?

TOM AND JERRY ON THE RISE AGAIN!

Making this week’s top five an entirely Warner Bros. affair, ‘Tom & Jerry: The Movie‘ moves up a place. The animated pair continue to have children of all ages howling with laughter at the antics and hijinks. Of course, it can’t hold a candle to the original cartoons but it is still guaranteed to at least put a smile on your face. But next time, in the inevitable sequel, can we please have fewer humans and more cat and mouse mayhem!

COMING SOON!

Another week, another new title is about to hit Download and Keep. And this week sees the release of the sequel ‘Peter Rabbit 2‘. Now, I thought this had only just hit the cinema screens. But it hardly matters as the film will hop onto home entertainment from Monday. Once again starring Rose Byrne, and Domhnall Gleeson in the live-action roles and boasting James Corden, Margot Robbie, and Elizabeth Debicki among others in vocal roles; the film wasn’t as well-received as the previous film. But still managed to turn a healthy profit. The film is a charming and engaging family film that will keep everyone entertained. With the addition of David Oyelowo into the cast, it has something for everyone. So why not hop to your preferred digital store and grab it from Monday?

DON’T BE RUDE! IT’S THE CROODS!

Leaping into the top ten in the sixth position ahead of its sequel’s debut in cinemas this weekend; we welcome ‘The Croods‘. Released back in 2013, the animated film is a hilarious adventure comedy film. Featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, Ryan Reynolds, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke, and the late Cloris Leachman, the film was a terrific success. The sequel, ‘The Croods: A New Age‘ was released in the United States back in November. But thanks to COVID, is only making its cinematic debut here this weekend. This time, the voice cast is joined by Kelly Marie Tran, Peter Dinklage, and Leslie Hope.

NOMADLAND WANDERS AWAY!

Dropping two places to end the past seven days in the seventh position, we find this year’s Best Film Oscar winner in ‘Nomadland‘. Starring the Oscar-winning Francis McDormand. And directed by the Best Director winner Chloe Zhao, the film has seen its fortunes reversed somewhat. But remains a decent and enjoyable drama.

JACKMAN’S FINAL STAND AS LOGAN!

Hitting the chart in the eighth spot comes one of the best comic-book movies of all time. Hugh Jackman’s final performance as the title character in ‘Logan‘. This hits the chart thanks to a 4K UHD release. The actor has played the role of Logan/Wolverine ever since the original ‘X-Men‘ back in 2000. And like a fine wine, he has gotten better with age. This final appearance is a much more violent affair than before. This isn’t a 12A affair, this is a hard 15 rated actioner. And it is also sad.

With co-star Patrick Stewart also playing Charles Xavier/ Professor X for the final time here, tears were and still are shed. Now, Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige and Hugh Jackman appeared together in an Instagram post over the weekend. Giving fans a tease that Jackman MAY be returning as the character in the soon-to-be-rebooted franchise. I’m not convinced. And I don’t think Jackman will wield the Adamantium claws again. But if he did…

RAYA IS ON HER WAY-A OUT!

Dropping a place to end the week down in the ninth spot is the Disney animated film ‘Raya And The Last Dragon‘. Which is coming extremely close to the chart exit door.

WONDER WOMAN HOLDS ON!

And finally, the comic-book sequel ‘Wonder Woman 1984‘ decides it wants to hang around for another week as it refuses to move from the tenth and final spot on the chart.

AND TO FINISH!

And that’s how the land lies this week in the charts. My thanks for joining in with the look at the top titles we are buying and watching. I’m now off to see ‘Black Widow‘ at the local multiplex! So until next week…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
