John Davis and John Fox reveal new details for the upcoming PREDATOR ‘Skull’ movie..and it ain’t no sequel!
Last year, it was discovered that Dan Trachtenberg had been secretly working on a new film in the ‘Predator’ franchise. Ever since the news became known, rumors have been circulating as to what the new film would be about. Was it a sequel? Who would be in it? And would there be a place for Arnold Schwarzenegger in the film? The answer to two of those questions is a firm no. The film is actually a prequel and is not what we were expecting.
The film is actually called ‘Skull’. It will feature, as already confirmed, a native American female hero. And the film will deal with the Predator’s first-ever trip to Earth. John Davis explained the film will serve as an origin story. Both he and John Fox explained that the film will be more in line with the original Schwarzenegger film than with the sequels. Davis explained:
“It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work. It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force,”
THE PREDATOR REVENANT?
John Fox went on to talk about the film and compared it to the Leonardo Di Caprio Oscar-winner ‘The Revenant’, saying:
“It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon. You’ll know what I mean once you see it.”
Just where the film will take place in the ‘Predator’ history, the pair wouldn’t be drawn, only saying “You can use your imagination. It is…early.” The film is apparently three-quarters of the way through its production but there is as yet no release date mentioned.
There still isn’t much that is known about the upcoming film except for the premise, which was revealed a while back:
“Kee, a Comanche woman who goes against gender norms and traditions to become a warrior. Many years ago – in a time before any Europeans had ever encroached on their lands – the Comanche people had a well-defined society and gender norms. Kee is very close to her younger brother, Taabe, who is being groomed as a leader.
As capable as any young man in the tribe, Kee has always been a teacher and source of inspiration for Taabe. In the Comanche way – she is Patsi – the elder sister that has helped to shape him. Kee is a truth-teller and has insight that others do not. A tomboy, she wants to prove herself in the masculine world of the Comanche. When danger threatens them all – Kee sets out to prove that she is as capable as any young warrior.”
I’m not too sure how I feel about what has been revealed about ‘Skull’. On one hand, I’m saddened that it isn’t a sequel as we would come to expect. I for one am still holding out hope that one day, Arnold Schwarzenegger would appear in a sequel, even if just for a cameo appearance. He was apparently going to appear in the last film, ‘The Predator’ but wasn’t happy with the size of the role. But if he was to appear as Dutch once again, I think it would be a fitting way to close the chapter of his character.
That being said, however, I think the new film has a great deal of potential. It will be enjoyable to see a Predator take on his very first hunting expedition. And having the film set against the backdrop of the native Americans will provide a welcome change from the concrete jungle. Having a Predator go up against a Native American warrior and the Shaiman from her village is a decent prospect. And it would be a welcome return to the basics that the original film did so well. It could also play really well into the Predator mythology and lore. And that can only be a good thing.
‘Skull’ will be released sometime in the future.
