The director slams the studio cut of his original movie.
While the sequel/reboot ‘The Suicide Squad’ is receiving rave reviews from all corners, spare a thought for David Ayer. Back in 2016, his film, the original ‘Suicide Squad’ was roundly derided by critics and fans worldwide. Although the film was a success, it isn’t fondly remembered. The only good thing that really came out from the wreck of the movie was Margot Robbie, bringing Harley Quinn to live-action cinema.
It has long been said that Warner Bros. released a studio-mandated cut of the film instead of Ayer’s original version. The hashtag #ReleaseTheAyerCut has been trending for a while, similar to the #ReleaseThe SnyderCut tag. Zack Snyder got to complete and release his version of ‘Justice League’ after fan pressure. The same cannot sadly be said about David Ayer.
DAVID AYER FINALLY SPEAKS OUT
The director seemingly has had enough. He has written and published a three-page letter. It was a response to someone on Twitter saying he should give up on the idea of ever releasing his cut of the film. He confirmed that he ‘put his life into Suicide Squad‘ and that ‘I made something amazing’. He then followed it up by saying:
“My cut is intricate and emotional journey with some bad people who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul). The studio cut is not my movie. Read that again. And my cut is not the 10 week director’s cut – it’s a fully mature edit by Lee Smith standing on the incredible work by John Gilroy. It’s all Steven Price’s brilliant score, with not a single radio song in the whole thing. It has traditional character arcs, amazing performances, a solid third-act resolution. A handful of people have seen it.”
THE FULL TWEET
Below is the full tweet David Ayer wrote and released on Twitter. Be advised, it does contain some strong language. But is genuine and from the director’s heart:
THOUGHTS
There now seems little doubt that David Ayer delivered a different film than we saw at the movies. And it appears that he is interested in seeing his vision completed and released, the same as ‘The Snyder Cut’. The director says he will no longer speak publically on the matter. He doesn’t have to. Everything that we need and wanted to know is here for everyone to read and digest. It comes from David Ayer’s heart. And you can understand the anger and the sadness he feels by having his name attached to something that isn’t truly his work.
A PERSONAL NOTE TO WARNER BROS.
Warner Bros. has said numerous times that they will not be releasing the Ayer cut of ‘Suicide Squad’. I’ll go on record now and say: Change your minds and fast. We, the DC fans WANT the Ayer cut to be released. We, the DC fans DEMAND that the Ayer cut is completed and released. Your studio-mandated disaster is disrespectful not only to the fans. It is disrespectful to the cast, crew, and the name of David Ayer. Your actions have led to years of criticism and ridicule of a great writer and director. Do the right thing.
RELEASE THE AYER CUT!
