James Gunn opens up about another characters potential demise in The Suicide Squad
Hopefully, by now, you will have seen this summer’s craziest blockbuster ‘The Suicide Squad’. It is, quite frankly, over two hours of the bloodiest violence seen outside of a horror movie. The amount of gore is more suited to a ‘Friday The 13th’ movie. And the strong language gives even ‘Goodfellas’ a run for its money. But underneath it all, the film has a heart. And of course, the deaths of many of the characters. Writer and director James Gunn has dropped a revelation about one character who he planned wouldn’t make it to the final credits. However, he couldn’t bring himself to kill the character off.
If you haven’t seen the film, this is the stopping point right here. I MEAN IT! After this, we will be delving into spoiler territory. If you don’t want to know who lives and who dies, stop reading now. FINAL WARNING!
Still with me? Then here we go.
THE SURVIVING MEMBERS OF THE SQUAD!
By the end of things, only Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, King Shark, and Ratcatcher 2 are still alive. Of course, just as the film ends, we discover Weasel DIDN’T drown and is still alive. We last see him walking into the jungle on Corto Maltese. And to further things, after the credits, we get a scene that shows The Peacemaker survived the bullet to the neck courtesy of Bloodsport. And survived the building collapsing. But it’s the main four that we see live to fight another day. The shock deaths of Captain Boomerang and Rick Flag notwithstanding, we could have guessed who would live. But if James Gunn went through with his plan, he would have ripped the heart out of the audience with one final death.
In an interview with Variety, Gunn admitted that originally, Ratcatcher 2 was destined to die right at the climax. The character played superbly by Daniela Melchior, was the heart of the film. But that didn’t stop Gunn from flirting with killing her off:
“There was a change. The original ending that I pitched, one main character died, and one main character did not die. And the main character who died was Ratcatcher 2. She was so sweet, I just felt it was just too dark. Not that we didn’t love Polka-Dot Man. We do. I just couldn’t kill [Ratcatcher 2]. So I relented.”
Going even further, Gunn explained that Harley Quinn and Bloodsport were never even considered for being killed off. Gunn said before the film’s release that anyone could be in the firing line to die. He previously told Total Film magazine:
“[The Studio] said I could keep [all the characters] or do away with them all. I could do a completely new squad-which I considered-and they said, ‘You can kill anyone.’ Warner were pretty much on board [with the story] from the beginning-it was pretty much firmly in place for the inception of me taking on the project. They were very trusting of me throughout the entire process, almost to the degree to which I was frightened because it really is all me, 100 per cent-there’s no one to blame if something goes wrong, except for myself!”
Let’s face facts. The audience would have rioted if Harley Quinn was killed off. Although the character isn’t the biggest powerhouse in the film, she is a major part of the DC universe. But we could get the feeling that Margot Robbie would survive the film. James Gunn has already admitted that he and Ms. Robbie have discussed making another Harley film. We can hope that it will be the already mooted ‘Gotham City Sirens’. But we will have to wait and see what develops next. Margot Robbie has already said she’s had a break from Harley and she will be stepping back into her shoes whenever they are ready.
As for the considered death of Ratcatcher2, I’m glad they didn’t go down that route. We feel for her from the start of the film and hope she sees the final credits. And of course, she does. Daniela Melchior brings a vulnerable quality to the character. She becomes someone we want to help if we can. And she really is the heart of the film. That’s not taking anything away from David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man. I was hoping he would also survive the film but it was not to be. Again, Dastmalchian brought something to the role that made us want him to survive. But if push came to shove, I would’ve picked Ratcatcher 2 over Polka-Dot Man as the character I wanted to see survive.
Will we see Ratcatcher 2 return in a third ‘Suicide Squad’ film? I’d like her to return but not if she’s going to go the same way as most of Task Force X do at the start of the film. Wiped out within the first ten minutes. With only Rick Flag and Harley Quinn surviving. If that would be planned to be her fate in the next film, then I’d rather she was left out of it. To go and live her life in peace. But we can safely assume that Will Smith if he’s available, will be back again as Deadshot. That would be fun. Deadshot, Harley, Bloodsport, Ratcatcher 2, and King Shark together. Bring back Killer Croc too and we could have a film for the ages. But that is for another time. Until then, we can still watch ‘The Suicide Squad’ while we wait for ‘The Peacemaker’ TV show early next year.
Just don’t get too attached!
‘The Suicide Squad’ is playing in cinemas around the world right now! The film is also available on HBO MAX for a limited time! ‘The Peacemaker’ will air in January of 2022.
