Peter Rabbit 2 The Official Film Chart

This week, Birds Of Prey flies high, and Luca arrives but Peter Rabbit is still burrowed in at the top!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD OPENS BUT IS LOWER THAN EXPECTED!

The DC comic-book sequel ‘The Suicide Squad‘ finally opened in the United States last Friday simultaneously in cinemas and on HBO MAX. Although its takings of $26.3million managed to see it hit the top spot at the box office, it was significantly lower than expected. It was thought the film would take $30million+. But yet again, the strategy from Warner Bros. didn’t pay off as they hoped. The simultaneous releases are hurting movies at the box office. Disney and Marvel have seen their blockbusters gross lower than they were expected to. Disney launched ‘Cruella‘ and ‘Jungle Cruise‘ in cinemas and on Disney+ Premier Access. While Marvel went the same way with ‘Black Widow‘. It is costing the films millions in lost takings.

SPEAKING OF WHICH…

The streaming services are now offering ‘Cruella‘ and ‘Black Widow‘ to download and keep right now. The exclusivity that Disney+ Premier Access enjoyed has now come to an end. Both films are available to buy on the streaming site of your choice for £19.99 each. Or you can wait a few weeks and pick them both up for £13.99-£14.99 each when they are building up for home entertainment release. ‘Cruella’ will become available for all Disney+ subscribers on August 27th. Whereas ‘Black Widow‘ will become available for all Disney+ subscribers in October. But the film will be available across all of the formats a month before that.

THE CHART

This week on the chart, we see almost all the same titles. They just move around slightly. This week sees the end of the top ten road for ‘Mortal Kombat’. But what is that important number one title? Is there still a carrot thief holding the top? Or has something else decided to scare it off? Please make sure your seatbelts are securely fastened and no smoking in the toilets during this flight, please!

Official Film Chart

PETER RABBIT 2 IS STILL BURROWED IN AT THE TOP!

The carrot thief remains where he is. For a third consecutive week, the top title is ‘Peter Rabbit 2‘. The family sequel continues its winning run as the UK’s favorite title to buy. Thanks to its release on the disc formats, the film has held its position across all formats ahead of the rest. It sold an amazing 87,000 units over the past seven days. It seems families up and down the country can’t get enough of the James Cordon voiced character. With the school summer holidays now firmly upon us, it is the perfect film to keep the young ones entertained.

THE CROODS REFUSE TO MOVE!

Sitting firmly and securely in second place again this week is the 2013 animated film ‘The Croods‘. While the sequel ‘The Croods: A New Age‘ is flying high at the country’s box offices, the original film continues to enchant audiences of all ages. After their cave is destroyed, a caveman family must trek through an unfamiliar fantastical world with the help of an inventive boy. Featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds, and Emma Stone, the film is an often hilarious romp. It is a perfect way to lose yourself for a couple of hours and spend some quality family time together.

THE TUNE SQUAD JAMMED INTO THIRD PLACE AGAIN!

The bronze medal position this week remains in the hands of ‘Space Jam‘. Once again, with the sequel ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy‘ entertaining audiences in the cinema at the moment, families have been catching up with the original. The film is a really enjoyable and often hilarious combination of live-action and animation. Who can’t fail to laugh at the antics of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and the rest of the Looney Tunes brigade? Ok, Michael Jordan can’t act for toffee but the animation more than makes up for this small problem.

PETER RABBIT BOXSET HOPS UP AGAIN!

Not being content with holding the top spot for the third week, Peter Rabbit decides his boxset needs to hop to it. And so it does, moving up a single place to take the fourth position this week. The ‘Peter Rabbit-1 &2’ boxset contains, naturally, both live-action/CGI animation films. It is now available across all home entertainment platforms and will be a welcome distraction if you fancy a few hours of peace over the summer holidays. And it is guaranteed to get the little ones asking for it to be put on time and again.

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN BOUNCES BACK!

Who would have thought it? Last week, ‘Promising Young Woman‘ was poised over the chart exit door. This week, it moves up by five places to round out the top five. Starring the ever-reliable Carey Mulligan, the film picked up the Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars this year. It has been roundly applauded by all critics and has been a great success. And is currently screening on Sky Movies as well as being able to own on all home entertainment formats. It is riveting entertainment all the way.

COMING SOON!

Hitting download and keep from this coming Monday is the Angelina Jolie action-thriller ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead.’ The film is an American neo-Western action film. It is based on the novel of the same name by Michael Koryta. Koryta, alongside Charles Leavitt, and the film’s director Taylor Sheridan wrote the screenplay for the film. Co-stars include Jon Bernthal, Aiden Gillen, and Nicholas Hoult. The film opened back in May to mixed reviews from critics. It also was a simultaneous release in the United States, depriving it of much-needed box office receipts.

The film follows a young boy who witnesses the murder of his father. He goes on the run with a smokejumper (Jolie). They flee into the wilderness in Montana to escape the clutches of the two assassins hired to murder the boy. The pair (Gillen and Hoult) use flares to start a forest fire to preoccupy the police as they attempt to complete their mission. This leads to a cat and mouse chase between the assassins and the escaping pair. It is an enjoyable film, one that deserves a chance to be seen. It doesn’t break the mold for this kind of actioner but it is worthy nonetheless. If this appeals to you, grab it on digital from Monday.

LUCA ARRIVES!

We return to the chart now with our only new entry this week. And it is a fond hello to Walt Disney’s ‘Luca‘, which arrives in sixth place. The film was sadly denied a cinematic release. Instead, going straight to Disney+ to stream for free to all subscribers. A boy named Luca and his best friend Alberto spends an unforgettable summer having the time of their lives with their new friend Giulia. But their fun is threatened by a pretty big secret. They’re actually scaley, yet harmless, sea monsters from a different world just below the water’s surface. The film is a charming and enjoyable tale for the whole family and one that is highly recommended.

BELOW THE SURFACE – Jack Dylan Grazer and Jacob Tremblay lend their voices to Alberto and Luca — two sea monsters who meet one summer off the coast of the Italian Riviera. With a shared fascination with all things human, Alberto and Luca venture to the seaside town of Portorosso together, where they experience gelato, pasta, and the power of friendship. Directed by Academy Award® nominee Enrico Casarosa (“La Luna”) and produced by Andrea Warren (“Lava,” “Cars 3”), “Luca” debuts on Disney+ on June 18, 2021. © 2021 Disney/Pixar. HARLEY QUINN FLIES HIGH AGAIN!

Margot Robbie and her completely brilliant ‘Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn‘ fly high again this week. A former number one title, the film moves up two places to take the seventh position. Thanks to the release of ‘The Suicide Squad‘ and a digital price cut, the film continues to be a highly profitable release.

THE LEAGUE FALLS AGAIN!

Dropping by four places this week is my second favorite film of the year. ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘ now fights from eighth place after spending almost four months inside the top ten.

TOM & JERRY STARTING TO FADE AWAY!

That lovable cat and mouse duo fall three places this week. ‘Tom & Jerry: The Movie‘ continues its cartoon/live-action hijinks from ninth place.

GODZILLA AND KONG ARE ALMOST DEFEATED!

And finally, in the tenth and final position this week, the two Titans of the Monsterverse are about to suffer a knockout. ‘Godzilla VS Kong’ falls three places to hang precariously over the chart exit door.

TIME FOR THE LANDING!

And we have now descended back down to the ground! Make sure you take all your belongings with you. My thanks for joining me on this week’s official film chart flight. And as always…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
