Mamma Mia! If you were to predict a videogame getting a new movie incarnation, ‘Super Mario Bros.’ probably ain’t it. I mean, TRY and remember the disaster that was the 1993 live-action film version. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo played Mario and Luigi respectively in a misguided film that saw them tasked with saving Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis) from President Koopa (Dennis Hopper). It was a critical and commercial failure, exactly what it deserved, to be honest. Hollywood has, until now, wisely steered clear of bringing the franchise back to the big screen. But that is all about to change. Never one to ignore the potential big bucks, a new movie featuring the classic Nintendo characters is on its way. But this time, it will be an animated affair.
MARIO!
The film is to be titled simply ‘Mario’. That is at the moment, however. I can see it being retitled to ‘Super Mario Bros.’ once again. But the big news is the voice cast that is in place for the film. None other than Chris Pratt himself has signed on to voice Mario. Charlie Day has been signed to voice his brother, Luigi. Other big names that are confirmed to be lending their voices to proceedings are Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach. Jack Black as Bowser. Keegan Michael-Key as Toad. And Seth Rogen will be giving his vocal tones to Donkey King. That is a pretty great cast for the venture from Nintendo, Universal Pictures, and Illumination Entertainment. It could be a brilliant animated family film when it hits screens on December 21st, 2022.
THE ANNOUNCEMENT POSTER!
The poster that announced the film is rather simple. But extremely effective:
‘Mario’ or ‘Super Mario Bros.’ or whatever it ends up being called hits the theatre coin boxes on December 21st, 2022!
Does this interest you? Do you think it’s the right way to go by making the film an animated affair? What do you make of the casting? Head down the green sewer pipes to leave your comments below!
