This week on the official film chart, Bond is back, and Fast 9 accelerates in, but it’s Ryan Reynolds who grabs the top spot!
Welcome to The Official Film Chart.
BLACK WIDOW HITS DISNEY+ TODAY!
For those of you out there that decided not to buy ‘Black Widow’ on digital or on the disc formats, today is the day you’ve been waiting for. The film that has held the top spot in the UK top ten for the past two weeks is now available to all Disney+ subscribers right now. The finale to Scarlett Johansson’s time in the role, the film is a delight from start to finish. So, if you’ve held your cashback and waited for it to stream for free on Disney+ (I didn’t), then it is ready and waiting for you right now!
JUNGLE CRUISE IS NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY!
Speaking of Disney and Disney+, this summer saw another film hit the cinema screens as well as Disney+ premier access. ‘Jungle Cruise’ stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in a rip-roaring action-adventure that is one of this year’s movie highlights. It is a cross between ‘The Mummy’, ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’, and ‘Indiana Jones.’ And is a fantastic family film. It was, last week, priced on all digital retailers at £19.99. This week, however, it has dropped to £13.99 on digital. It is also available for £14.99 on Blu-Ray and £9.99 on DVD. It is bound to figure highly in the chart next week. Possibly, it may even grab the top spot.
THE OFFICIAL CHART
This week on the official top ten, it is an almost total wipeout! We are once again treated to seeing new titles appear. It has been a long time in coming but the big blockbusters are finally back. As such, we must say goodbye to ‘The Thing’, ‘Nobody’, ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.’, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’, ‘Peter Rabbit 2’, ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League.’, and ‘Godzilla VS Kong’. But can Scarlett Johansson hold onto that coveted number one position? Or has something else driven in to claim the top spot? Buckle up, this could be a bumpy ride.
FREE GUY FREELY TAKES THE TOP SPOT!
It was a close-run thing this week. But ultimately, Ryan Reynolds pulled off a sensational win. Coming out of nowhere to claim the top spot, our new number one is ‘Free Guy’. The film tells the story of Guy (Reynolds), who believes he lives in a perfect world. Even though it is somewhat eventful, he loves his life. Until one day when he discovers he is a non-playable character in a violent video game. Shocked by this discovery, he decides to become the hero in his world and his own story. Co-starring Jodie Comer, the film is an often hilarious family tale. And features a quite brilliant cameo from a big-name star.
BLACK WIDOW IS FORCED TO CONCEDE!
‘Free Guy’ may have taken the top spot but it was only by 90 sales, giving us an almost photo finish. However, Scarlett Johansson has to concede defeat as ‘Black Widow‘ tumbles a place to take this week’s second place. However, Ms. Johansson can’t be too sad in all respects. Firstly, the film is still selling well, is still critically acclaimed, and is now available on Disney+, giving the film a chance to sell more units. And two, her legal dispute with Disney has been resolved with a large financial package for the actress, and her name is back in the fold for more Disney projects.
FAST & FURIOUS 9 SPEEDS INTO THE CHART!
Hitting the accelerator and speeding into the official film chart in this week’s third place comes ‘Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga’. Vin Diesel and his ‘family’ return once more in another all-action and, to be honest, quite outlandish movie. This time, he is joined by WWE superstar John Cena as his long-lost, vengeful brother Jakob. The film contains the usual standard of great stunts, thrilling action, and completely unbelievable plot twists. It was said that the franchise would end up going into outer space as a joke. Only, during the film, they do. It all comes down to whether you like the films in the franchise or you don’t. And I do, and I had a great time with it.
BOND IS BACK!
Daniel Craig is currently wowing audiences with his final James Bond film ‘No Time To Die.’ The movie has boosted cinema audiences across the UK. And thanks to digital price cuts for the entire back catalog of the franchise, this week’s number four title is ‘Spectre’. The movie rises by seven places. The film is Craig’s fourth outing as 007 and is the one where Blofeld was re-introduced to the franchise. It is a highly enjoyable Bond film, with classic stunts, great action, good humor, and Craig is a fantastic 007. The opening sequence is worth the price of admission alone. The ending SHOULD have been the stopping point for Daniel Craig’s time in the tuxedo. However, he has come back for a final turn as Bond. And I for one will miss him strolling across the screen in the classic Gunbarrel opening.
IN THE HEIGHTS DANCES ITS WAY INTO THE TOP FIVE!
Our third and final new entry for this week is the musical drama ‘In The Heights’. The big-screen adaptation of the stage musical of the same name by Quiara Alegria Hudes and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the film was an unexpected box office failure. Despite critical acclaim, the film grossed $43million against a budget of $55million and a $200million break-even point. The film follows a similar plot to the musical, telling the story of a corner in the predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan in New York City, where every member of the community pursues their dreams of a better life. The film stars Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace. Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega. Gregory Diaz IV, Jimmy Smits, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
BOND IS BACK…AGAIN!
Not being happy with grabbing this week’s fourth place, Daniel Craig appears as 007 once again in ‘Casino Royale’. Craig’s first outing as James Bond has risen by thirteen places to take this week’s sixth spot. The film rebooted the Bond franchise after the quite awful ‘Die Another Day.’ Pierce Brosnan’s final outing as the secret agent. After all the online negativity about Craig’s casting as Bond, he stuck the proverbial two fingers up and delivered a Bond to be reckoned with. And in doing so, became quite possibly the best James Bond of them all. The film blew the box office apart and started the Craig-Era as 007.
007 GETS 003 SPOTS IN THE CHART!
‘The World Is Not Enough.’? No, for Daniel Craig and James Bond, two places inside the top ten aren’t enough! Rising by seventeen places, this week’s 007th position goes to ‘Skyfall’. Daniel Craig’s third outing as Bond is arguably the best of the five he’s done. In the film, we are re-introduced to Miss Moneypenny (Naomie Harris) as well as ‘Q’ (Ben Whishaw). And of course, we lose one ‘M’ in Dame Judi Dench but gain a new one in Ralph Fiennes. The final scene alone makes the film one of the most thrilling Bonds of them all. And brings us back to where we should be with the franchise.
MONSTER HUNTER LOOKS BEATEN!
Dropping six places this week to fight the creatures from the eighth place is ‘Monster Hunter’. The new team-up between writer/director Paul W.S Anderson and his wife Milla Jovovich has fallen quite dramatically over the past seven days. But remains an entertaining film for the whole family.
LUCA SWIMS BACK INTO THE CHART!
After falling out of the top ten a few weeks back, the Disney Film ‘Luca’ returns this week. The charming animated film swims back into the chart by rising nine places to take this week’s ninth position.
HITMAN’S WIFE’S BODYGUARD SUFFERS A FATAL WOUND!
And finally, the former number one title ‘Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ has almost succumbed to its wounds. It falls six places to end the week in the tenth and final spot on the official film chart.
