This week on The Official Film Chart, we see an Injustice and a new Purge but it’s still Fast & Furious 9 that parks itself at the top of the chart!
Welcome to The Official Film Chart.
THE SUICIDE SQUAD IS NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY ON DIGITAL!
The buildup to the release of this summers big blockbusters onto home entertainment is now in full swing. This week sees the release of the DC sequel ‘The Suicide Squad.’ The film, once again starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn is available on digital download to buy right now. With the additions of Idris Elba, John Cena, and the outstanding Daniella Melchior, the film is my favorite movie of 2021 (so far). It isn’t for everyone and it is extremely violent and gory. It is chock full of bad language and a brief shot of male nudity. But it is also a lot of fun, with some great laughs and plenty of action.

THE TOP TEN CHART!
This week on the chart, it is almost a case of the same old, same old. However, thanks to one new release and a film that moves up to take a place in the top ten, it isn’t. We must wish 007 a speedy farewell as we lose ‘Spectre’, and ‘Skyfall’ from the top ten. But, as always, the question is what is topping the chart this week? Has Vin Diesel managed to hold on at number one? Or has something else entirely taken stolen his thunder? Top up the chart tank with fuel and let’s go for a ride.
FAST & FURIOUS 9 PARKS AT THE TOP AGAIN!
Despite a terrific rally from the film occupying this week’s second position, our number one film remains ‘Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga’. The tenth film in the entire franchise, the film has managed to hold onto its place, thanks to 86% of its sales coming on the disc formats. Once again, Vin Diesel leads the film alongside Michelle Rodriguez and the rest of his ‘Family’. Joining the mayhem is John Cena while Charlize Theron once again is on villain duties. The next film in the franchise goes before the cameras in January of next year ahead of one final ride for the main franchise.

THE CROODS RISE TO A NEW HIGH!
Rising six places to take this week’s second position is the animated sequel ‘The Croods: A New Age’. The film is yet another success for Universal Pictures. Despite COVID preventing the film from following the United States and releasing in November of last year, the wait seems to have been worth it. It made a great dent at the box office when it opened here earlier this summer. And thanks to PVOD, it has been a great success. Now with its release on home entertainment and specifically on the disc formats last week, the film continues its winning run.

JUNGLE CRUISE TAKES ON WATER AND SINKS A PLACE!
The latest Disney film based on a ride at its theme parks, ‘Jungle Cruise’, has sunk a place this week. The Dwayne Johnson/ Emily Blunt-led comedy-action flick drops to drop its anchor at the third position. However, the film is still enjoying its time inside the top ten ahead of hitting Disney+ for all subscribers in November. With a healthy box office return and great PVOD business, the film has been a great success for the House Of Mouse. And a sequel has already been announced so we can expect more adventures featuring the two enigmatic leads.

FREE GUY IS IN FREE FALL!
Dropping a place to take the fourth position is the Ryan Reynolds comedy ‘Free Guy.’ Despite being available to watch on Disney+ for all subscribers, the film has been a great success on PVOD and the home entertainment markets. And it deserves it. It is one of this year’s best films, a surprising and refreshing treat for the entire audience. The eagle-eyed will be hooked watching out for all the references to gaming and online media. The adults will be entertained by the antics of the main characters. And children will love the graphics and the laughs the film contains.

WE HAVE RISEN!
While his sequel is entertaining the masses inside the country’s cinemas, the home entertainment chart is enjoying a dose of ‘Venom’. The first film to feature Tom Hardy as the Marvel anti-hero, the film moves up a place to round out this week’s top five. I’m sorry to all those who don’t like the film. I loved it when I first saw it at the cinema. And I still love it today. I find it is very entertaining, fun, nasty, and completely enjoyable. Tom Hardy is perfectly cast as Eddie Brock/ Venom and the whole film rocks.

THE CHART GETS A PURGE!
Rising eight places to claim the sixth position on the chart is the action-thriller ‘The Forever Purge’. The fifth film in the franchise (and a sixth already on the way), the film makes its chart debut this week. This is all thanks to its release onto the disc formats after being available for a few weeks on digital to buy. This time around, a radical group of insurrectionists decides to break the biggest rule of The Purge. Instead of stopping their killings at daybreak, they continue their murderous spree after the Purge’s end time. The mayhem, violence, and gore are in abundance here again as usual. And it is entertaining…if you like that kind of thing, of course.

BLACK WIDOW ON THE WANE!
The Scarlett Johansson farewell as ‘Black Widow’ slips back by two places this week as it drops to the seventh position.

OLD WEAKENS!
M. Night Shymalan’s ‘Old’ loses a place after making its chart bow last week, falling this week to the eighth position.

THE LOONEY TUNES JAM THEMSELVES INTO NINTH PLACE!
LeBron James and those lovable Looney Tunes are a non-mover this week as ‘Space Jam-A New Legacy’ jams itself into the ninth spot for another week.

INJUSTICE LANDS IN THE CHART!
And finally, this week’s only new entry makes its way into the top ten in the tenth and final position in the chart. Coming from Warner Bros. Animation, the film ‘Injustice’ is a new animated DC film. It is based on an alternative Earth. The Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois Lane. This sends Superman into a deadly rampage as he decides to take over the Earth for the good of all humanity. Batman must gather a team of heroes together to try and put a stop to his plans. This will pit members of the Justice League against each other. The film is rated 15 for strong bloody violence, meaning it is unsuitable for younger viewers.

AND WE ARE DONE!
And that’s the end of that chapter! Time for us to park the car back into the chart garage for another week. Thanks once more for joining me on our road trip through the chart placings. And, as always…
Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
