This week on the Official Chart, Snake Eyes slithers up the chart, and Elf returns but it’s Shang-Chi who fights his way to the top!
Welcome to The Official Film Chart.
JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION DROPS FIVE-MINUTE PRELUDE FOOTAGE!
They are here in our world. And damn, if they don’t look good. Earlier this year, five minutes of footage from next year’s ‘Jurassic World: Dominion.’ was screened before IMAX showings of ‘Fast 9: The Fast Saga’. That footage has now been released for everyone in the world to see. It is enough to get the excitement for the closing chapter of this trilogy of dinosaur movies going. However, the footage we will see WON’T actually be in the completed movie. It is, in effect, a five-minute-long teaser trailer, bringing us up to date with what we can expect in the film. But it is enjoyable all the same. And more so if you are a ‘Jurassic Park/ Jurassic World’ fan. Let’s take a trip back in time:
THE OFFICIAL CHART
As we speed headlong towards Christmas (one month today is Christmas Eve), we can expect to see many Christmas movies arrive in the top ten. Quite a few will see price cuts on the digital stores, ready for us to buy for the holiday season. For this week, we see the usual comings and goings. It is a case of saying goodbye to ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’, and ‘The Croods: A New Age’. But what is the all-important number one as we head into December? Can The Suicide Squad keep blasting away at the top? Has Shang-Chi managed to punch his way to the summit? Or has something else entirely beaten off all comers? It’s time to find out.
SHANG-CHI KNOCKS OUT ALL THE OTHERS!
After debuting last week in the third position, Marvel Studios’ ‘Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings’ has fought his way to become our new number one. 78% of its sales this week have come on physical copies. The film, starring Simu Liu and Awkwafina gives the character his big-screen debut. And it is a belter! Although it isn’t the best of the Marvel films, it does exactly what it needs to. It is a thrilling ride, one that is often quite funny to go along with the action and a considerable amount of moderate violence. And it does contain some cameos along the way.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD HAS BEEN DEFEATED!
Last week’s number one is this week’s number two as the DC sequel ‘The Suicide Squad’ drops a single place. A rip-roaring action-packed thrill ride from the start, the film isn’t to everyone’s tastes. Full to the brim of violence, gore, and bad language, this isn’t your usual DC film. It has more in line with ‘Birds Of Prey: And The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn’, ‘Joker’, and ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ than ‘Shazam!’ and the other 12A rated fare. But I enjoyed it and continue to do so.

PAW PATROL TAKES ANOTHER WALK DOWN!
Those lovable pooches take another walk down this week. The animated ‘PAW Patrol-The Movie’ drops a single place to round out the top three titles. The film will delight kids and young ones and is guaranteed to keep them occupied for hours. It has great repeat viewing potential and is a film that would make an ideal stocking filler from Santa for them. Just be prepared to have to sit through it time and again. But it will give you some quiet time when they are watching it to have a quiet sherry or two in the kitchen.

THE GRINCH CREEPS UPWARDS!
“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch!” Or as the song goes at least. Creeping his way up the chart by two places is ‘The Grinch (Animated).’ This version of the classic tale stars the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch as the little green creature. It is a worthwhile purchase and will bring joy to all who watch it. But sadly, I much prefer the Jim Carrey live-action version. But that is just me. Everyone has their favorite version. And I’m not going to argue which one is better.

SNAKE EYES GET ROLLED IN THE FIFTH SPOT!
After entering the chart a few weeks back on digital downloads, only to drop out a week later, ‘Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins’ returns this week. Thanks to its release on the disc formats, the film has climbed nine places to take the fifth spot. Starring Henry Golding as the eponymous character, the film is as it says, an origin story. But sadly, the film was a box office flop. Many reviewers said the film was a complete mess. And some even went as far as to call it boring. It seems as if the reboot for the ‘G. I Joe.’ franchise has fallen at the first hurdle.

FAST AND FURIOUS 9 RUNS OUT OF FUEL!
We now start our tour of the lower positions of the chart. And at number six, we find that Vin Diesel and his family have started to run out of fuel. The brakes have surely failed now as ‘Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga’ skids down another two places. I still found the film to be enjoyable, even if the formula is starting to wear thin. But my advice is still to buy the director’s cut on digital as it is much better.

BLACK WIDOW GETS WASHED OUT!
Another of Marvel Studios’ releases for this year, ‘Black Widow’ gets washed out this week. The Scarlett Johansson swansong as the character falls another two places to land in seventh place. The film has been quite a success on PVOD, retail, and at the cinema. And remains a terrific film to keep everyone entertained.

HARRY POTTER CONJURES UP A PLACE RISE!
Using his magic, and his broomstick to rise a single place this week, ‘Harry Potter-The Complete Collection’ flies up to occupy the eighth spot on the chart. People still can’t get enough of the boy wizard. And the complete collection box set does make for a wonderful gift for the fans in your life.

JUNGLE CRUISE RUNS OUT OF STEAM!
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt are sinking fast. Their enjoyable action-comedy romp ‘Jungle Cruise’ drifts further down the chart. This week, after running out of steam, the film drops by two places to become this week’s number nine.

WILL FERRELL’S ELF RETURNS AGAIN!
And finally…we had to expect it! Will Ferell’s 2003 Christmas tale ‘Elf’ has returned once again. Taking its customary place in the top ten at this time of year, the film rises by eight places to take the tenth and final spot this week. And I have to admit, the film is one of my personal favorite Christmas movies to put on. It continues to make me laugh and never fails to give me a warm feeling.

FINISHING OFF
And that, as they say, is that. We are done touring through the top ten for another week. My thanks for coming along on our weekly chart journey. And as always…
Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
