This week on the Official Chart, Arsene Wenger is Invincible, and Jim Carrey Returns but it’s Benedict Cumberbatch’s Grinch who steals the top spot!
Welcome to The Official Film Chart.
THE LAST DUEL IS AVAILABLE TO BUY!
It seems like Sir Ridley Scott’s ‘The Last Duel’ has only just opened at the cinemas. It makes no difference though as it is now available to buy on the streaming services. The film is an epic historical drama film. The screenplay is by Nicole Holofcener, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon. It is based on the 2004 book The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France by Eric Jager. Set in medieval France, the film stars Damon as Jean de Carrouges, a knight who challenges his friend, squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver) to a judicial duel after Jean’s wife, Marguerite (Jodie Comer), accuses Jacques of raping her. The events leading up to the duel are divided into three chapters, reflecting the perspectives of the three main characters. Affleck also stars in a supporting role as Count Pierre d’Alençon.

THE OFFICIAL CHART
Today is the 1st of December. As such, we can expect to see the usual deluge of Christmas movies start to arrive. This week sees a single new entry alongside two re-entries. To make way for these newcomers, we must bid goodbye to ‘Snake Eyes: G.I Joe Origins’, ‘Harry Potter-The Complete Collection’, and ‘Jungle Cruise.’ But what is that all-important number one title? Could Shang-Chi have held his own at the top? Or has something festive reached the top of the (Christmas) tree? Leave the tinsel and decorations for a while, it’s time to find out.
CUMBERBATCH’S GRINCH STEALS THE TOP SPOT!
I thought ‘The Grinch’ would hit the top of the chart. I just didn’t think it would be THIS version! Climbing three places and dethroning Shang-Chi, our new number one is ‘The Grinch’ (Animated). Yes, Benedict Cumberbatch’s version of the classic tale has finally topped the UK chart. As I’ve said before, the film is good and is enjoyable. It is just that the Jim Carrey version is much better. But that hasn’t stopped this animated version from stealing the top of the tree finally. It has had a strong showing on the digital markets in its 32nd total week on the charts.

SHANG-CHI IS BEATEN INTO SECOND PLACE!
Last week’s number one has been beaten into second place this week. But despite being overcome, ‘Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings’ still gives a good account of itself. The Marvel Studios debut film for the character is one of the year’s most entertaining films for the whole family. It does contain some scenes that may be unsuitable for the smaller children but they will love it. No spoilers but it does contain a Dragon, which had me cheering loudly.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD LOSES MORE WAR FOOTING!
The DC action sequel ‘The Suicide Squad’ loses more footing this week. The film drops a single place to take the bronze medal position. The film is a violent, gory, hilarious, and rip-roaring rollercoaster from the start. It remains highly enjoyable. However, it has split the DC fans down the middle with its version of Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie plays her with style as always and was born to play her. But the fans are not happy with the way the film turns her into a violent psychopath at times. I thought it was a good turn for the character. But it appears I am in the minority.

PAW PATROL GOES WALKIES AGAIN!
Another film that moves down a single place this week is ‘PAW Patrol-The Movie’. The big-screen version of the classic animated show continues to delight the smaller children. It will keep the little ones entertained while you try and get the house ready for the big day. At the very least, it will keep them out of your hair for ninety minutes or so. It also makes for a charming gift to give to your child or one you are close to.

CARREY’S GRINCH HITS THE TOP FIVE!
Now, THIS is what I call ‘The Grinch’! Rising nine places to take the fifth spot is Jim Carrey’s live-action version of ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas’. The film makes its traditional appearance for this time of year. The best version of the classic story remains a favorite Christmas movie and is loved by almost everyone. I have it on at least twice a week, even if it is just playing in the background. It is one of the most hilarious and enjoyable family films of all time. And Jim Carrey is brilliant as the mean, green character.

ARSENE WENGER IS INVINCIBLE!
Our only new entry this week debuts in sixth place. And we say Bonjour to ‘Arsene Wenger-Invincible’. The film is a documentary about the legendary football manager. It depicts the 22 years he spent at the helm of Arsenal F.C. And how he made it the success it is today. The film has seen terrific sales on the disc formats. It is the perfect gift for the Arsenal fan in your life and will be appreciated for years to come. I’m a Liverpool F.C fan but also a football fan in general. I found the film to be a great tribute to Arsene Wenger and a great documentary in total.

BLACK WIDOW HOLDS FAST!
Holding fast in seventh place is Marvel Studios’ ‘Black Widow’. It seems as if we can’t quite let go of Scarlett Johansson as the title character yet. She hangs around the chart for another week at least.

FAST & FURIOUS 9 ON THE SKIDS!
Sliding down the chart again this week by a further two places, Vin Diesel and ‘Fast And Furious 9: The Fast Saga’ now parks itself in eighth place. The film is slowly skidding down the placings. But I’d expect it to rebound as we drive towards Christmas.

ELF IS ON THE MOVE!
Rising a single place to take this week’s ninth position is the hilarious and charming ‘Elf’. The Will Ferrell family Christmas favorite will see its fortunes boosted over the coming weeks as families grab it on all formats.

SPACE JAM SLAM DUNKS ITSELF BACK INTO THE TOP TEN!
And finally, you just can’t keep those lovable Looney Tunes down. After departing the chart last week, ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’ rises six places to take the tenth and final spot on this week’s chart.

TIME FOR SOME EGG NOG!
And I’m done. It’s time for me to sit back with a mince pie and a glass of egg nog. My thanks for joining in the chart rundown once again. And as always…
