James Bond and Wonder Woman lead the charge on the Official Film Chart as the Home Entertainment value soars thanks to lockdown.
The Official Film Chart has crowned its yearly champion. And what a twelve months we had on home entertainment during 2021. We had a few big hitters come home to roost. We saw classics dominate the listings week in, week out. And we enjoyed our fill of decent movies and TV shows we purchased or rented across the formats. Thanks to the lockdown, the value of home entertainment rose by £3.7billion in 2021. That’s an increase of 13.3% from 2020. Blu-ray disc sales made up almost a quarter of the 21.1-million-disc sales in the UK.
The final week of 2021 saw the biggest week ever for digital buy and keep, with 17.7 million digital transactions being made throughout the year. The biggest distributor of home entertainment last year was Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. And now 16 million households have access to some kind of subscription account.
THE BIGGEST HITS
Out of all of the titles we saw inside the top ten charts of last year, one stood out amongst them all, sales-wise. Even though it hit digital on 15th December and the disc formats on December 20th, the biggest title of the year was ‘No Time To Die.’ The latest James Bond film, featuring Daniel Craig’s final appearance as 007 sold 1.148 million copies. It had the largest week one sales since 2017. And it even notched up the biggest ever week one sales on 4K UHD. The film had the biggest download and keep sales week since records began at Christmas. Not bad for a film that finally hit cinema screens in the UK on September 30th, 2021 before making a splash on PVOD.

The best-selling rental title of 2021 came in the shape of ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’ The film had the misfortune to open in cinemas a few days before the UK went into lockdown in December of 2020. It was then, wisely, debuted on PVOD before it emerged onto the retail formats. The DC comic book sequel, once again starring Gal Gadot as the title character, notched up an impressive 27.4 million digital rentals. Considering the PVOD transactions are usually around £15.99 per rental, that is a large chunk of cash the film managed to make. It seems that the UK public didn’t want to wait to see the film in cinemas when they reopened and rented it instead.

LOOKING FORWARD
So, there we have it. The complete listings for what we watched, bought and rented during 2021. There is quite a mix of genres that made up our viewing habits. And so, we must now look towards 2022 and what we will be buying from this point forward. Apart from ‘No Time To Die.’ which is currently still ruling the top ten chart, we can now download and keep films such as ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’, and ‘Halloween Kills.’ But coming in the next few weeks, we will see ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ from January 10th. And the week after, we can grab ‘Dune’ for ourselves. And that is before the release of the box office smash that is ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and ‘The Matrix Resurrections.’

The outlook for this year looks extremely promising. And I raise my glass in anticipation of what 2022 will bring us on home entertainment.
