Denzel Washington In The Equalizer 2, A Sony Pictures Release.

Antoine Fuqua is also back on board for the third adventure for Robert McCall.

Based on the 1980s TV show, the two movies of ‘The Equalizer’ have been a roaring success. Denzel Washington took over the role of the former U.S marine and Intelligence officer from British star Edward Woodwood. The role was reimagined from its original incarnation on TV. At the end of the original film, it was brought in line with the premise of the TV show, much to the delight of fans. The sequel kind of swept the premise set up aside somewhat but was still an enjoyable action film. We all wondered if a third film would be in the offing. Well, now we know for sure. Black Film & TV are reporting that Denzel Washington and director Antione Fuqua have signed on to make ‘The Equalizer 3.’ And what’s more, it will start shooting later this year.

WASHINGTON CONFIRMS THE NEWS!

While speaking with Collider about his upcoming film ‘The Tragedy Of Macbeth’, the subject of the third film was raised. In response, Washington said:

“They have written the third Equalizer, so I’m scheduled to do that. So I gotta get in shape and start beating people up again. I get to beat people up again. The Tragedy Of Macbeth and then going and beating some people up. Can’t get any better, right?”

Antione Fuqua has previously stated that he wanted to return for a third film in the franchise and has already said that he would “Love for it to take place internationally.” That would be a great way for Washington’s character to kick some ass somewhere else in the world.

THOUGHTS

I’m over the moon that Denzel Washington is coming back to make a third ‘Equalizer’ film. I thoroughly enjoyed the previous two entries in the film franchise. They were not your common Hollywood action film. They took things slow, built up the tension and story before unleashing the action and violence in controlled bursts. The end to the first film was sheer brilliance. The second film’s climax was good but couldn’t quite top the original’s. That said, however, both films were elevated by having Washington in the lead role. Quiet, soft-spoken with a warmth radiating from him, you’d never expect him to be prone to bursts of violence. And that is what made the films so good, in my eyes. So, I’m looking forward to sitting down once again and seeing what Washington and Fuqua can come up with this time around.
