A new year brings us new entertainment as the best of movies and TV arrive in our own homes.
The new year is already in full swing. And the same goes for the home entertainment market. With box office hits already riding high in the weekly top ten charts, we can look forward to an influx of more top-quality entertainment becoming readily available. It is now the best time to catch up on that cinema blockbuster you saw and loved. Or even missed out on seeing. What about that series that all your friends are talking about but you missed? Maybe the children want to see a film that is aimed directly at them? Don’t fret, they’ve got you covered.
Do you want a good laugh at a brilliant third film in a long-running franchise? Look no further than ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’ The third film in the original franchise is one of the best films of last year. It follows on wonderfully from the 1989 second film. It brings a sense of nostalgia and fun while moving the franchise forward for a new generation. Full of jokes scares and emotion, the film is ideal for the whole family. It is available to buy on digital download now ahead of its disc release on January 31st.
Another film that is available now on digital download ahead of a January 31st disc release is the remake of the Frank Herbert novel ‘Dune.’ The film is worthy of the term epic. Denis Villeneuve co-writes and directs something so grand in scale and visually stunning that you can’t take your eyes off the screen. With great performances from the cast, it will transport you away for almost three hours. And not a single moment is wasted.
COMING SOON IN JANUARY!
In addition to ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ and ‘Dune’, January sees the release of several other titles that may be of interest. For the little ones, we have ‘The Boss Baby 2.’ Already available to buy on digital, the animated sequel hits the disc formats on January 24th. The same day, we have ‘Doctor Who: Flux’ arriving on disc. The 13th series of the rebooted series is a must for all ‘Whovians’ out there. Or we have the drama ‘The Nest’ which stars Jude Law and Carrie Coon.
February sees three titles that may interest you. The first is ‘Thomas & Friends: Race For The Sodor Cup.’ As you’d expect, the film features Thomas The Tank Engine and his friends. The film pulls into stations on February 14th. Or if you’re in the mood for a scare, try the film ‘Shepherd.’ The film depicts a depressed man, mourning the death of his wife who comes into contact with a supernatural force. It scares itself a disc release on February 21st.
But the biggest film so far announced for February is Marvel’s ‘Eternals.’ The comic book film is currently available to watch on Disney+ for all subscribers. And is available to buy on digital download. But if you are a completionist or would rather own a physical copy, February 7th sees the film arrive on the disc formats.
March so far has three new releases listed. The first is ‘Dragon Knight.’ The film is a fantasy epic set in a world of feuding kingdoms, with a lone warrior embarking on a quest to find the last of the dragons in preparation for one last battle. Or we have ‘Soulmates.’ The six-episode series is set fifteen years into the future, where science has evolved to tell us exactly who our soulmate is. Both titles will be released on March 21st. But the film of the month is ‘Clifford The Big Red Dog.’ Hitting disc on February 14th, the film follows the character of Emily, who finds her little red puppy has grown ten feet tall overnight. It is a delightful tale for kids and one that they will lap up.
ALSO DUE FOR RELEASE!
Also due for release in the first three months of the year are some of 2021s biggest cinema releases. Alongside some quality TV shows. The TV releases are ‘And Just Like That’, the follow-up series to ‘Sex And The City.’ ‘Reyka’, a crime thriller series. And Sir David Attenborough’s ‘The Green Planet’ which is currently being shown on the BBC. The movies include ‘King Richard’ which stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father of Venus and Serena in a biopic. ‘Mothering Sunday’, a drama that stars Colin Firth, Olivia Coleman. Josh O’Conner and in a terrific main performance, Odessa Young. And the Benedict Cumberbatch true story of British artist Louis Wain in ‘The Electrical Life Of Louis Wain.’
A surprise film that is due for release by the end of March is the newly released horror film ‘Scream.’ The fifth film in the franchise opened on Friday of last week and is currently the number one film at the box office. Once again starring Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, and David Arquette, the film has been given great reviews.
The Steven Spielberg-directed remake of the classic ‘West Side Story.’ is also due for release. Although the film has been a bit of a box office failure, it has been reviewed highly. And is expected to be in the running for the Academy Awards this year.
Someone else that is expected to be in the running for an Oscar this year is Lady Gaga. And her nomination will be for the film ‘House Of Gucci.’ The film follows Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, the former wife of Maurizio Gucci who is played by Adam Driver. The film depicts the murder of Gucci by hitmen who were hired by Reggiani, who was eventually jailed for her actions. Directed by Sir Ridley Scott, the film has received mixed reviews but has been a success at the box office.
But the film that stands out against the rest is the third solo film for Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ The film has blown the box office apart so far and has until recently led the world’s box office. The film leads into the upcoming ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.’ With the returning Alfred Molina, Willem Dafoe, and Jamie Foxx, the film is one of the best films 2021 had to offer. With surprises along the way, the film is two and a half hours of brilliant entertainment. And is bound to lead the home entertainment charts for many weeks when the film is released on all formats.
WHAT WILL YOU BE BUYING?
There are some great titles due for release over the coming few months. Many of them will certainly be riding high in the top ten charts upon release. I shall certainly be buying many of them for my own collection. But more importantly, what will YOU be picking up for your own collections? The choice is all yours.
