This week on The Official Chart, 007 stands strong, and Spencer glides in but Ghostbusters: Afterlife still haunts the top spot!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY IS NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY ON DIGITAL!

The horror reboot ‘Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City’ only opened here in the UK at the start of December. But this past Monday has seen the film move off of PVOD and become available to buy on Digital download. Based on the first two games of the long-running horror game franchise, it is the seventh live-action film in the film franchise. It is set in 1998 and follows a group of survivors who must band together. This is the only way they can hope to survive a zombie outbreak in the small town of Raccoon City. The cast includes Kara Scodelario, Hannah John-Kamen, and Robbie Amell. And brings to life several famous characters from the games as they should be played. A modest box office success, the film is a decent enough scary horror that is enjoyable.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

As usual, the chart this week sees the usual traffic. Titles come and go, new releases appear, old favorites hang around. Sadly though, that means that we have to wish a fond farewell to one title. And this week, it is the turn of ‘Hotel Transylvania 3’ to leave us. But what is hanging out at the top of the chart? Does busting still make us feel good? Has the spice of Arakkis enchanted us to make it the chart-topper? Or has something else emerged to take over the lead position? It’s time for us to find out.

BUSTIN’ STILL MAKES US FEEL GOOD!

Holding firm at the top of the chart for the third week in a row is threequel ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’ The long-awaited sequel to the 1980s classics continues its amazing run in the top position. It was a close-run thing this week, however. The second title in the chart gave the superstars of the supernatural a run for their money. But they managed to hang on in there once again. One of the best films of 2021, the movie pays tribute to what’s gone before while moving the franchise forward. I expect there will be a sequel announced before too long. And one that will feature the new cast front and center.

DUNE GATHERS MORE SPICE AT NUMBER TWO!

Holding firm in the second position but giving the Ghostbusters a real fright is ‘Dune.’ The big-budget remake of the Frank Herbert novel is catching up fast. Directed by Denis Villeneuve and his dream project, the film is a massive undertaking. And one that pays off in spades. Timothee Chalamet leads the cast in this epic retelling of the first half of the novel. With great support from Zendaya, the film is something to be marveled at and admired. The second part should be hitting cinemas at the end of 2023. But this film is one that you should watch and remember for a long time after.

007 REFUSES TO MOVE FROM NUMBER 003!

Holding firm itself as the top three remains unchanged is ‘No Time To Die.’ The latest James Bond film and the last to star Daniel Craig has been a huge success on home entertainment. Within seven days of release, it had sold by the bucketload. And the final week before Christmas saw a massive upsurge in sales. Not bad for a good but not great Bond film. The way to view it is that it is the final film in a five-film arc that started back in 2006 with ‘Casino Royale.’ When the new James Bond film is released, it wouldn’t surprise me if Daniel Craig’s tenure is referred to as a standalone Bond story. And one that won’t affect the overall timeline or previous events before Craig’s time in the tuxedo.

WE HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE UP!

Would you argue with Venom if he demanded to move up a place? I wouldn’t. And perhaps that is why ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ rises a place to claim the fourth position. The sequel, although slightly inferior to the original film, is a great piece of entertainment. The character fits Tom Hardy like a glove. And he brings his A-game when it comes to voicing Venom himself. His acting against something that’s not there until post-production is superb. Woody Harrelson is brilliantly scary as Cletus Kasady/Carnage and between the pair of actors, make the film a great watch.

ENCANTO DECIDES TO RISE!

The top five this week are rounded out by the Disney film ‘Encanto.’ The film has been a great success on home entertainment and Disney+. This despite not being a box office hit when it was released at the cinema. But to be fair, it wasn’t given much of a cinematic run before being unveiled on the streaming service. It remains a highly entertaining film that will capture the hearts of children and adults of all ages. And it also features a song that has topped the UK and USA singles charts.

THE BOSS BABY DEMANDS TO RISE!

We begin our look at the bottom five titles in this week’s chart. And we are immediately squirted in the eye with baby formula. Dreamworks’ animated sequel ‘The Boss Baby 2: Family Business’ has left the boardroom and decided to move up the chart by two places. The hilarious family animated movie now resides in the sixth position.

HALLOWEEN DOESN’T SEEM TO BE KILLING IT ANYMORE!

Dropping three places this week to find its knives blunted in seventh place is the horror sequel ‘Halloween Kills.’ Jamie Lee Curtis once again portrays Laurie Strode in this middle chapter of the new trilogy. James Jude Courtney once again plays Michael Myers to brilliantly frightening effect. And the film is bloodthirsty, nasty, and scary. Just as it should be.

THE ETERNALS ARE NOT SO ETERNAL!

The Marvel Films superhero movie ‘Eternals’ doesn’t live up to its name as it drops a place to eighth this week. The film, featuring Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, and Angelina Jolie is available to all Disney+ subscribers at no extra cost as well as being available to buy on digital. The disc release is Monday 7th February so the film could bounce back.

NOBODY STAYS PUT AT NUMBER NINE!

After re-entering the chart last week in the ninth spot, Bob Odenkirk decides he wants to stay as ‘Nobody’ is a non-mover. The film is a surprisingly enjoyable action film, one that took me by surprise. It really is 90 minutes plus of action, drama, and some surprising comedy. And features a terrific turn from the legendary Christopher Lloyd. One that I highly recommend watching.

SPENCER MAKES AN ENTRANCE IN THE TENTH SPOT!

And finally, we come to our only new entry this week. The critically-acclaimed and award-winning film ‘Spencer’ enters into the chart in the tenth position. Starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana, we see Diana join the royal family for Christmas at Sandringham Estate. Haunted by rumors of her partner’s infidelity and a hidden mental health struggle, Diana decides to end her marriage with Prince Charles while keeping up appearances for the season. Now, I haven’t seen the film so I cannot comment on whether it is good, bad or indifferent. But it sounds like the perfect night in film for drama lovers.

FINISHING OFF!

And there we have it. The official top ten for the past seven days. With what we already have and with what is coming out over the coming weeks, we are spoilt for choice. I’ve already got my eye on several that are due between now and March 31st. And my own personal library is increasing all the time. I hope yours is too. But in the meantime…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
