THE OFFICIAL CHART

This week sees no new entries into the top ten. But we do see two re-entries into the chart in the lower positions. As such, we must bid farewell to ‘Resident Evil-Welcome To Raccoon City’, and ‘Boiling Point.’ Outside the top ten placings, we see Will Smith’s ‘King Richard’ in twelfth position. And Clint Eastwood’s ‘Cry Macho’ in number 20, based on digital downloads alone.

But what could be occupying the top spot in the chart? Has ‘Encanto’ managed a second week at the summit? Has ‘Dune’ shifted its sands to regain its former glory? Or has something else decided to gracefully occupy the top of the chart? Dress up in your fancy best, it’s time to find out.

HOUSE OF GUCCI STYLES ITSELF INTO THE TOP SPOT!

Despite the outrageous snub to Lady Gaga from the Academy, our new number one film is ‘House Of Gucci.’ The film received mixed reviews from critics. They praised the cast and their performances but attacked the inconsistent tone. The film has taken the top spot based on downloads alone. It hit the physical formats this past Monday. It is an  American biographical crime drama film directed by Ridley Scott. It is based on the book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden. The film follows Patrizia Reggiani and Maurizio Gucci played by Lady Gaga and Adam Driver respectively. We watch as their romance transforms into a fight for control of the Italian fashion brand Gucci. Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons. Jack Huston, Salma Hayek. And Al Pacino lends their talents in supporting roles.

ENCANTO DROPS TO SECOND PLACE!

After Lady Gaga decided she wanted to be number one, it means that last week’s chart-Topper ‘Encanto’ has to drop to second place. The film follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals. They are helmed by a matriarch whose children and grandchildren except for Mirabel Madrigal, receive magical gifts. They come from a “miracle” that helps them serve the people in their rural community called “the Encanto”. When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to find out what is happening. And save her family and their magical house. It is a charming and wonderful tale for children of all ages.

THE KING’S MAN FIGHT UP A PLACE!

The franchise prequel ‘The King’s Man’ has moved up a place this week to number three. The film stars Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton in an entertaining romp. It serves as a look at how the titular organization started back in the early 20th century. It is a good action-comedy in its own right but can’t quite live up to the heights of the first ‘Kingsman’ film. But the sharp-eared amongst us will pick up the subtle hints that point the way towards the franchise we know and love. And one scene, in particular, recalls THAT scene in the original that had us all laughing into our popcorn with its sheer audacity. The cast gives the film they’re all but it is Gemma Arterton that really stands out amongst them. Her one F-Bomb near the end had me laughing out loud. The film hit the disc formats this Monday so it will be interesting to see if it will move even higher in the charts.

DUNE SHIFTS ITSELF DOWN TWO PLACES!

Former number one ‘Dune’ sees itself blown down the chart this week. The epic science fiction film drifts down two places to end the week in the fourth-placed position. The writer and director of the remake, Denis Villeneuve, has spoken this week about the upcoming second film, which will cover the final half of the original novel. Villeneuve says the second part of the book will be “Where the fun begins.” As for the first part, it is an epic in every sense of the word. It is stunning in scale, both visually and with the sheer grandeur of it. It is well-acted by the entire cast who immerse themselves into their roles fully. No spoilers but be warned, not all of the cast make it to be involved with the second film. And Zendaya’s part is really just an extended cameo. But it is something that has rightfully been acknowledged by the Academy Awards. The film has ten nominations in total.

(L-r) JOSH BROLIN as Gurney Halleck, OSCAR ISAAC as Duke Leto Atreides, and STEPHEN MCKINLEY HENDERSON as Thufir Hawat in Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ action-adventure “DUNE,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

THE GHOSTBUSTERS REFUSE TO MOVE!

The top five placings are completed by ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ which is a non-mover at five. The film was a standout at the back end of last year. And drags the franchise forward into the twenty-first century with ease. It is one of those films that brings nostalgia back to the viewers who went to see the original films back in the 1980s. And introduces the franchise to a whole new generation of fans. We do get to see the original ‘Ghostbusters’ in action one more time but the film hands the baton onto a new cast who will take it forward. It is a genuinely enjoyable film, with great comedy and performances. And it ties into the original film extremely well. The plot brings us effectively full circle from the 1984 film. But they couldn’t help but revisit one of the classic lines in the climax of the original to the surprise of the older fans. And they will lap it up.

BOND RISES TO POSITION 006!

We start our look at the bottom five places with a mover. It seems 007 wasn’t happy occupying seventh place last week. And as such ‘No Time To Die’ moves up to position 006. The fifth and final time with Daniel Craig wearing Bond’s tuxedo has been a smash hit, not only at the cinema but especially on home entertainment. It continues to sell well on all formats. And is still exciting the audiences across the country.

THE ETERNALS ARE MORTAL AFTER ALL!

Dropping down the chart this week by four places is the Marvel Studios film ‘Eternals.’ The film has seen a drop in sales for some reason or another as it now lands in the seventh place. And maybe being available on Disney+ to stream isn’t helping matters. But so too is ‘The King’s Man’ and that hasn’t stopped it from being a success. However, the film is a good piece of entertainment for the whole family, even if it isn’t as good as it thinks it is.

WE WANT TO MOVE UP!

And who can argue with Venom? No one unless they want to have their heads bitten off. Tom Hardy and his symbiote alter ego have decided to move back up the chart by a single place. Their sequel ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’ now occupies eighth place on the weekly chart.

THE BOSS BABY DECIDES TO RETURN!

After dropping out of the top ten last week, ‘The Boss Baby 2: Family Business’ isn’t finished with us. The animated sequel moves up again by five places to return once again in the ninth position.

THE CHART GETS FAST & FURIOUS…AGAIN!

And finally, we find that we can’t keep Vin Diesel and his ‘family’ away from the top ten for too long. And so it proves as ‘Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga’ accelerates back up again. This time the film races back into the top ten by speeding two places to take the tenth and final spot.

END OF THE LINE!

And that is everything for this week. We should be seeing some big releases start to hit the chart shortly. Films such as ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’, ‘The Matrix Resurrections.’ And ‘Scream’ are scheduled to be coming to home entertainment very soon. And it is possible that one or more of these big hitters could be with us at the start of next week. My personal opinion is we will see ‘Scream’ first. ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ will probably be in mid to late March. But we will have to keep an eye on the releases that drop during the weeks. And await the official confirmations. We may be in for a surprise or two. But in the meantime…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
