This week on The Official Film Chart, West Side Story dances into the charts, and The Suicide Squad blast back but nothing can stop The King’s Man from claiming a second week at the top!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

NO MAJOR NEW RELEASES THIS WEEK!

This week, there are no big new releases to have hit the formats. This is understandable as the film companies are looking to get their smaller fare out and possibly make them a success. They are wisely avoiding the coming weeks and the juggernauts which are on the horizon. In the coming few weeks, we have ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ swinging its way in on digital download. ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ is also coming at us fast. And we have the possibility of the new ‘Scream’ film leaping out at us from nowhere. Film companies are gearing up for an assault from the big guns. And mid-April is rumored to see the digital release of ‘The Batman.’ too.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

This week sees most titles shifting their positions. We have one new entry and re-entry to contend with. To make way for these two titles, we must say farewell to ‘Eternals’, and ‘Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga.’ Only two titles manage to hold their positions this week. But what titles are they, and is one of them last week’s number one film? Put on your finest and let’s go take a look.

THE KING’S MAN REIGNS SUPREME AGAIN!

For the second week in a row, our top title is ‘The King’s Man.’ The prequel to the Colin Firth-led films manages to hold firm at the top of the chart despite some close competition from the number two film on the chart. The action-comedy-drama stars Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton amongst others. It details how the titular spy organization came into being and follows the efforts to defeat a dastardly plan. It is a good and enjoyable film in its own right. And it does feature some great nods to the first two films. But I did find it lacking in some parts sadly which dampened my enjoyment of the film slightly. But fans of the franchise will love it. And it is guaranteed to give you some laughs along with the action and violence.

ENCANTO BATTLES BACK!

You can’t keep a good Disney film down for long. And so it proves with ‘Encanto’ this week. The film, a former number one, has moved up a place to grab this week’s silver medal position. It was a close-run thing. It gave ‘The King’s Man’ a run for its money to be this week’s chart-topper. But it ultimately had to settle for second place. The film has been a huge success on the home entertainment formats as well as Disney+. It also has the chance to retake the top spot before our friendly neighborhood web-head arrives to dominate the charts. Families across the country have taken the film to their hearts and it seems that they can’t get enough of the film.

DUNE IS BLOWN UP THE CHARTS!

Another former number one has also moved up a place this week to grab the bronze medal position. Denis Villeneuve’s epic remake of Frank Herbert’s novel ‘Dune’ continues to sell well on the formats. Thanks to its ten Oscar nominations, the film has seen a resurgence in its popularity. And rightfully so. This is one of those films that demands to be seen on the biggest screen possible, just so you can get the full effect of what has been made. The smaller screens at home diminish its power somewhat. But make no mistake, the film still has the power to astound the viewer. Casting is now taking place for the second film, which will cover the second half of Herbert’s novel. And it is being said that British actress Florence Pugh is in talks to take the role of Princess Irulan, the daughter of The Emperor Shaddam IV. It sounds like the second film will be another mammoth undertaking and just as epic.

BOND IS BACK AT NUMBER 004!

The biggest release on home entertainment of 2021 has risen a place to become this week’s number 004. Daniel Craig in his final Bond adventure ‘No Time To Die.’ continues its winning run inside the top ten. The film has smashed records ever since it hit the home entertainment formats back in December. It flew out of the gate when it hit digital download. And then sold by the thousands when it hit the disc formats on December 20th, right before Christmas. It is a former number one title and has been moving around the top ten ever since it debuted. It seems as if the delay to the film’s cinematic release whipped the fans and the public into a frenzy, giving it a huge following.

GAGA’S HOUSE IS BEING TO FALL!

The top five titles this week are rounded out by ‘House Of Gucci.’ The film, based on true events, falls by three places. The much-hyped movie, directed by Sir Ridley Scott has been a success, both cinematically and on the home entertainment front. Boasting the star power of Lady Gaga, Adam Driver. Jeremy Irons, Jared Leto. Salma Hayek, and Al Pacino, the film has captured the attention of the home audience. Critics gave the film mixed reviews but the public has lapped it up in their droves. But, in my opinion, the Oscar snub to Lady Gaga for Best Actress is a travesty. She should have been nominated. And she most likely would have won too.

THE GHOSTBUSTERS HOLD FIRE FOR A WEEK!

We now start our look at the bottom five titles in this week’s top ten. And it is here where we find our second non-mover of the week in ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife.’ The film, the third in the original franchise remains a chart steadfast. And rightfully so. The film is a wonderful and emotional sequel. It brings the original generation back into the fold while opening it up for a new breed of fans. And I loved it.

SPIELBERG’S MUSICAL REMAKE DANCES INTO THE CHARTS!

Our only new entry this week enters the chart in seventh place. And it is a musical welcome to Steven Spielberg’s remake of the classic ‘West Side Story.’ The film has arrived inside the top ten based on digital downloads alone. This remake of the classic 1957 film tells the story of gang rivalry. It follows the two teenage gangs the Jets and the Sharks amid a whirlwind romance between two members of opposite sides. The film has been nominated for several Oscars. But strangely, the film was a box office flop upon its release. And that isn’t fair. The original film was great in its own right. But Spielberg’s remake is equally as good as the original film. I can see the film getting close to the top of the charts when it hits the physical formats.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD BLAST BACK INTO THE CHART!

Rising by three places to take this week’s eighth spot is the re-entry of ‘The Suicide Squad.’ The big-budget comic book sequel blasts its way back into the chart. The film is a fun, enjoyable, and extremely violent DC movie. The film wasn’t the success it was expected to be. And I blame Warner Bros’ ‘Day And Date’ strategy that they employed for all of their releases last year. You can’t expect a film to be a billion-dollar grossing hit when you release it on HBO MAX the same day for all subscribers. However, I went to see it on the big screen and I had a great time with it.

WE ARE FALLING!

After holding the eighth spot for several weeks, our beloved symbiote has lost its grip on it. Falling by a single place is ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage.’ The comic book sequel, starring Tom Hardy once again, drops to become this week’s number nine.

PAW PATROL IS TAKING A WALKIES BACK OUT OF THE CHART!

And finally, those lovable pooches in ‘PAW Patrol-The Movie’ are taking a walk once again. The animated movie, a former number one title, is walking out of the chart once more as it falls three places to end the week in the tenth and final position.

FINISHING OFF!

And that’s all, folks! We are done for yet another week. Next week, I can see the usual pattern continuing. The same titles will rise, fall and re-enter the chart for the next fortnight. It is the chart commencing the week of the 30th March when we will see some major movements. By then, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’, and ‘The Matrix Resurrections’will have hit the digital format. And you can guess that some of the previous films in these franchises will be making an appearance inside the top ten. And so, it is a case of waiting now to see what happens when they land. But for now, and until next week…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
