CinemaCon gets taken over by Dinosaurs, horror, and Michael Myers as Universal Pictures reveals their big movies!
Universal Pictures has pulled back the curtain on some of their big-budget movies coming our way at this year’s CinemaCon. And boy, do they have some doozies in their arsenal! There was plenty to get excited about. But for me, there was one film that I’ve been waiting to see footage of. And when it came, it was astounding. After the reveal of the ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ first look, you’d be forgiven for thinking that nothing could top it. WRONG! Universal has some of the best-looking movies coming up on their release slate. And none more so than the final chapter in the new trilogy of one of their longest-running franchises.
JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION
Of course, I’m speaking of the sixth film in the ‘Jurassic’ franchise. Billed as the final chapter of a six-film story, ‘Jurassic World: Dominion.’ shook the ground with the audience. It is fast looking to be the film of the summer and the biggest film of the year. Literally. Bryce Dallas Howard and Jeff Goldblum were in attendance to bring the audience the new trailer for the movie. It focuses mainly on the baby of that cuddly(!) Velociraptor Blue as well as Blue herself. When her child is stolen, the world is in shock. And demands to know how such a baby could exist.
It falls to Owen (Chris Pratt) and Clare (Howard) to come to the rescue. They recruit the original ‘Jurassic Park.’ team of Alan Grant (Sam Neill). Ellie Satler (Laura Dern) and Ian Malcolm (Goldblum) to help them with the rescue. With an all-out war between the dinosaurs and humans, Blue’s baby could be the only thing that can lead to peace between us all.
The film I’m most interested in this year. Jamie Lee Curtis was on hand to introduce the first trailer for the final part of this new trilogy. And to officially confirm that this is her final time playing the character of Laurie Strode, saying to those present that “Mommy’s Tired!”. She also mock chastised the audience for not giving her a standing ovation when she appeared. “C’mon guys, it’s only been 44 f*****g years!” was her exact response. But the trailer didn’t skimp on the gory details. The trailer starts with some footage from the 1978 original film. It recaps Laurie’s history with Michael Myers. It brings us up to the 2018 reboot of the franchise.
The footage cuts back and forth between the first film and the nastiest parts of the two newest movies. But then we get what we came for. The first footage from ‘Halloween Ends.’ We see Laurie hiding in a closet from Michael before surprising him. She comes at the masked killer with a knife. And we see the pair engage in a violent and gory fight. This could be the ‘Halloween’ movie to top them all.
Ok, so this isn’t something you’d expect to see on the big screen. But it looks Bats**t crazy! David Harbour is Santa Claus! With his elves! In a Christmas action movie! Yes, you read that right! Santa Claus is becoming an action hero. The synopsis for the film is:
An elite team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound on Christmas Eve, taking everyone hostage. But the team isn’t prepared for a surprise combatant: Santa Claus (Harbour) is on the grounds. And he’s about to show why this Nick ain’t no saint.
The trailer shows the family suffering the home invasion. The legendary John Leguizamo is the leader of this terrorist group. The child of the family begs Santa for help with the situation. And he does, showing up with his elves to take on and kill all of the terrorists. And you can certainly count me in! Die Hard meets Santa Claus? I’m already there!
Universal also offered up trailers for three more of their movies that will arouse our curiosity when they are released. Two of them won’t be released until January of next year. But one will be hitting screens in August. That film is the Idris Elba-starring ‘Beast.’ The movie sees Elba taking on the role of Dr. Nate Samuels, who is:
“A recently widowed husband who returns to South Africa where he first met his wife on a long-planned trip with their daughters to a game reserve. But what begins as a journey of healing jolts into a fearsome fight for survival when a lion, a survivor of blood-thirsty poachers who now sees all humans as the enemy, begins stalking them.”
The footage showed Elba bringing his children to Africa after the death of their mother. His friend (Sharlto Copley) and he discovers that a crazed lion is on the prowl, attacking and butchering people. The lion attacks them all, leading to Elba and Copley going out on a hunt to take on the lion. In addition, they face a battle with a violent rebel army they come across. The film sounds very much like ‘The Ghost And The Darkness.’ but I’ll pay my money to sit and see it when it opens on August 19th.
Although it won’t hit theaters until January 13th, 2023, the trailer for the film ‘M3GAN’ was revealed. The star of the film, Allison Williams was on hand to introduce the trailer for the movie which is a James Wan/ Blumhouse venture. In the film, Allison Williams plays the role of:
“Gemma, a brilliant roboticist at a toy company who uses artificial intelligence to develop, M3GAN, a life-like doll programmed to be a kid’s greatest companion and a parent’s greatest ally. After unexpectedly gaining custody of her orphaned niece, Gemma enlists the help of the M3GAN prototype – a decision that has unimaginable consequences.”
The film has, from our first look at it, a ‘Child’s Play’ vibe to it. The robot, Megan, is described as ‘Part of the family now.’ But the robot develops a mind of its own, leading it to begin to murder anyone who upsets her human child friend. And the footage shows that the killings are done in a very gory way from the start.
LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMENTOR
The film has taken twenty years to reach the screen since it was written and conceived. But the movie has booked itself a January 27th, 2023 release date. Directed by Andre Ovredal, who directed ‘Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark’ the film regards:
“A single chapter, the Captain’s Log, from Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula. The chapter tells the story of the Russian schooner, Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo – twenty-four unmarked wooden crates – from Carpathia to London. The film will detail the strange events that befell the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. When it finally arrived near Whitby Harbour, it was a derelict. There was no trace of the crew.”
The footage shown looks to be incredibly gory and nasty. Perfect to scare the pants off the audience. The main star appears to be Corey Hawkins but Liam Cunningham also appears as the captain of the ship. And it looks to be a film to keep an eye out for.
