The Official Charts - The Batman Rises To The Top

This week on The Official Film Chart, Sonic The Hedgehog races in, and Morbius takes a bite out of the chart but it is The Batman that returns to the top spot!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

THE LOST CITY IS TO BE DISCOVERED NEXT WEDNESDAY!

The box office hit ‘The Lost City’ has joined the ranks of films that will be hitting Download And Keep shortly. The film from Paramount Pictures drops onto the service next Wednesday, June 29th. Sandra Bullock stars alongside Channing Tatum, Daniel Radcliffe, and a cameo from Brad Pitt in an action/comedy/ romance film for all ages. The film is an entertaining one that will keep everyone happy. It is funny, action-packed, and full of thrills and spills. It is reminiscent of ‘Romancing The Stone.’ And I enjoyed it very much. It is an entertaining and charming way to waste two hours and will leave you with a smile on your face. It will hit the physical formats on July 25th and is bound to be a popular choice of viewing.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

Well, it’s happened. What we all knew would happen in this week’s chart has come true. The chart has had a shakeup that is desperately needed. With this in mind, we have to bid goodbye to ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’, ‘Drive’, and ‘Uncharted’ this week. But what is the number one title? Can Maverick still hold his position? Has Gotham’s Dark Knight risen from the shadows? Or has something else raced in to take the top spot? Come out of the shadows as we head out to see what’s made the grade.

THE BATMAN EMERGES FROM THE SHADOWS AGAIN!

Well, I can’t say I’m not surprised. Because I am. Instead of a hedgehog taking the top spot, our new number one title is ‘The Batman’ once again. Thanks to its release on the physical formats, Matt Reeves’ superhero blockbuster returns to the top of the chart. Robert Pattinson’s debut as the Dark Knight has beaten off all-comers to the throne. It has seen an amazing 93% of its sales this week on the physical formats, including 22% on 4K UHD. It has also claimed the second-highest opening week on disc this year, beating its nearest competition by almost double. The film, clocking in at a whopping three hours, is a more detective noir take on the comic book material. It is far darker and more sinister than we have seen before. Although I have my problems with the film, it is a highly enjoyable journey alongside Batman.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 RACES INTO THE CHART!

Our new number two title is the family sequel ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2.’ The film claims the second position based on downloads alone, claiming the biggest title of the week on the digital format. The film follows Sonic and Tails, who team up to find the Master Emerald before Dr. Robotnik and Knuckles the Echidna do, while also contending with the military organization G.U.N. Ben Schwartz once again brilliantly voices Sonic while Idris Elba voices Knuckles. And the ever-reliable Colleen O’Shaughnessey voices Tails. With another terrific comedic performance from Jim Carrey and support from James Marsden, the film is THE family film of the summer.

TOP GUN TAKES A DOWNWARD FLIGHT!

Our former number one has flown the coop down into the third position this week as Tom Cruise’s original ‘Top Gun’ drops two places. While the sequel ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is still powering its way at the world’s box offices, its forebearer has been beaten in the chart flight. But no matter its position, the 1986 film is still one of the greatest films ever to come out of the 1980s. And its soundtrack still lives on to this day. There are many people out there that still get a thrill when ‘Danger Zone’ is played on the radio. And I have to admit, I’m one of them!

MORBIUS TAKES A BITE OUT OF THE CHART!

Flying in on his vampire bat wings is the latest Sony/ Marvel hybrid ‘Morbius.’ The film is based on the comic book character of the same name and stars Jared Leto as Dr. Michael Morbius. Matt Smith plays his adopted brother Milo. In the film, Morbius and his surrogate brother Milo become living vampires after curing themselves of a rare blood disease. Now, the film is too intense for younger viewers, hence the 15 certificate. But it is also a letdown in many departments. This isn’t the quality that we have come to expect from the Sony MCU. And the relative failure of the film on a critical and box office level testify to that. However, the film is entertaining enough and it is nice to see the character on the big screen finally. The film enters the chart on digital downloads alone in fourth place.

DUNE GETS BLOWN UP THE CHART AGAIN!

We round out the top five with the science fiction epic ‘Dune.’ The film, a former number one has been blown up the chart again by two places. Set in the far future, the film follows Paul Atreides as his family, the noble House Atreides, is thrust into a war for the deadly and inhospitable desert planet Arrakis. The film has been the darling of the awards season, even taking home six Oscars. The sheer scale and monumental undertaking director Denis Villeneuve has achieved cannot be understated. The sequel ‘Dune Part Two’ is currently underway ahead of an October release in 2023. And I get the feeling that the Academy has held back awarding Villeneuve so far until the sequel is completed and released. They did the same thing to Peter Jackson for ‘The Lord Of The Rings’ until the trilogy was complete. Then the awards flocked his way.

THE DUKE STEALS HIS WAY INTO THE TOP TEN!

Although not a new entry, this week the 2020 film ‘The Duke’ makes its top ten debut by moving up by six places to steal the sixth spot. Dealing with the 1961 theft of the Portrait of the Duke of Wellington, the film stars Jim Broadbent, Helen Mirren, Fionn Whitehead, Anna Maxwell Martin, and Matthew Goode. The film is a comedy-drama, based on true events. It focuses on a taxi driver, Kempton Bunton, who steals Goya’s painting The Duke of Wellington from London’s National Gallery back in 1961. And is a terrific film in its own right. Many critics showered the film with praise when it was released. And the film deserves all the plaudits.

THE MATRIX SUFFERS A FATAL ERROR!

The fourth film in the franchise, ‘The Matrix Resurrections’ suffers a fatal error in its quest for chart success this week. The film, once again featuring Keanu Reeves as Neo drops three places to become this week’s seventh biggest-selling title.

NO TIME TO MOVE FOR 007!

Holding firm in the eighth spot, James Bond 007 retains his license to kill as ‘No Time To Die’ is a non-mover. The film, Daniel Craig’s swansong as the secret agent is one of the best-selling titles in the UK for the back end of 2021 and well into 2022.

SING 2 HAS SUFFERED FROM A SORE THROAT!

In a surprise descent, ‘Sing 2’ plunges down the chart by six places to end the week in the ninth position. The animated sequel has been a huge success with the buying public but it appears that they have now had their fill of Buster Moon and his friends.

SPIDER-MAN LOSES HIS GRIP!

And finally, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man has lost his grip this week. His latest movie ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ has been washed out by four places as it ends the week in the tenth and final position.

FINISHING OFF!

That’s your lot for this week. And what a week it has been. The chart is really starting to see some top-quality titles debuting right now. And as we approach the Summer holidays, we can expect a fair few more to start to arrive. It will be quite the battle for the top placings over the coming months. And the big winners will be us, the buying public. With that in mind…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
