This week on The Official Chart, we return to The Lost City, and Morbius bites back, but it is those Fantastic Beasts who return to the top!
Welcome to The Official Film Chart.
THE BLACK PHONE IS NOW AVAILABLE ON PVOD!
It was back in June when the film ‘The Black Phone’ opened in cinemas (Read Our Review Here.) But thanks to Universal’s exclusive 45-day release window, the film is now available to rent on the PVOD market. In the film, an abducted teenager uses a mysterious telephone to communicate with the previous victims of his captor. It stars Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, a child kidnapper, and serial killer in a terrifying performance.
Based on the 2004 short story of the same name by Joe Hill, the film is directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill. Both also produced the film with Jason Blum. The low-budget coming-of-age supernatural horror film made quite the impression at the box office, going on to gross $141.1 million against its production costs of $16-$18 million. The film is a worthy scarer and is a great watch late at night. It is available to rent for £15.99 from your preferred site right now.
THE OFFICIAL CHART
This week’s chart manages to gain three re-entries into the top ten placings. These films have been riding high in the charts before and have decided to grace us with their presence once again. But that means three titles have reached the end of the chart road. And so, it is a tearful goodbye to ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2’, ‘The Bad Guys’, and ‘Operation Mincemeat.’ But what has happened to that all-important number one? Is it still occupied by the Multiverse? Have the Vikings conquered the top spot? Or have a wizard’s secrets managed to conjure up a top spot finish? Grab your wands, it’s time to investigate the top ten.
THE SECRETS OF DUMBLEDORE REGAIN THE TOP SPOT!
After taking the top spot two weeks ago, only to be dethroned by Doctor Strange, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore’ has managed to conjure up becoming the official UK number one again. The film, the third in the ‘Wizarding World’ franchise has managed to return to the top after becoming available on physical formats. 87% of the film’s sales this week have come on disc formats. Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law return once again in a film that despite being hailed as better than the previous entry ‘The Crimes Of Grindelwald’, didn’t reach the financial heights of the first two films. The proposed five-film franchise now looks to be in serious threat of becoming a trilogy instead. But for fans of the ‘Harry Potter’ universe, the film is a must-have to go into their collections.
THE LOST CITY IS REDISCOVERED IN SECOND PLACE!
Thanks to being released on physical formats, Paramount’s action comedy ‘The Lost City’ rebounds back into the chart in the second position. The film, starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum, and Brad Pitt is one of this summer’s biggest hits. Its combination of action, comedy, and romance struck a chord with audiences across the globe. It is almost a throwback to the 1984 hit ‘Romancing The Stone.’ It shares more than a few traits with that film but it is to the film’s advantage. It is a great film that will have you laughing, cheering, and booing Daniel Radcliffe’s villain. It is lightweight fluff but highly enjoyable all the same. The two leads make for a great pairing and Pitt, despite only really having an extended cameo, makes for a brilliant action hero.
DOCTOR STRANGE IS BANISHED INTO THE MULTIVERSE OF THIRD PLACE!
Last week’s chart-topper ‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’ sees itself banished from the top spot. This week, the Marvel film returns to the Multiverse as it falls to the third spot. Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen return as Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch respectively in a darker comic book movie. Directed by Sam Raimi, it has quite a few scary moments that may not sit well with younger viewers. But the film is still an enjoyable film that fans and non-fans alike will snap up and enjoy. One of the customary stingers leads towards the upcoming phase 5 of the MCU and throws up a few questions along the way. Cumberbatch is great as always as Strange but it is Elizabeth Olsen who steals the film as Wanda/ Scarlet Witch.
THE BATMAN CONTINUES TO INVESTIGATE THE FOURTH SPOT!
Another former number one title continues to hold onto the fourth spot this week. Thanks to a price cut to £9.99 on digital for a limited time, ‘The Batman’ continues to watch over Gotham. The film, running at almost three hours in length, is a much darker take on the adventures of Gotham’s defender. It is more of a detective noir than a superhero film. And it doesn’t always work. But despite a fair few problems, it does contain a brilliant performance from Robert Pattinson as Batman himself. A sequel is already in the planning and the fans have voiced who they would like to be the villain in the second film.
THE NORTHMAN IS HEADING SOUTH!
Rounding out this week’s top five is the Viking epic ‘The Northman.’ The film, directed by Robert Eggers and starring Alexander Skarsgard falls three places to the fifth position. Co-Starring Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, and Willem Dafoe, the film is heavily influenced by Norse mythology. The story follows a Viking Prince who swears vengeance after the murder of his father. Sadly, the film was a bit of a box office flop upon release but has fared much better in the PVOD and retail markets. And it deserves to be a success as it is an enjoyable film from the start. I can highly recommend it for some weekend entertainment or late-night viewing.
SPIDER-MAN STILL CAN’T FIND HIS WAY HOME!
We begin our look at what is making up the bottom five places in the chart with a riser. Using his legs to crawl up a place and to give himself a 20th week on the top ten charts is ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’ The third solo outing for Tom Holland continues to rule the yearly top ten chart by some margin. The film itself is a terrific comic book movie. And the fans went crazy for the final scene, showing Spider-Man in his comic book/ classic cartoon series outfit.
SING 2 GETS A FROG IN ITS THROAT!
Falling a place this week to perform from seventh place is the animated sequel ‘Sing 2.’ The film, a former number one title has been in or around the top ten places ever since it hit the retail market. And despite its fall this week continues to be one of the go-to films for parents across the country.
DUNE DRIFTS BACK INTO THE CHART!
It must be all the hot weather. The UK has, at times, felt like a desert this summer. And maybe that’s why the science fiction epic ‘Dune’ has drifted back into the top ten once more. The film, the big winner at this year’s Academy Awards, is blown five places up the chart to become this week’s eighth top-selling title.
TOP GUN FEELS THE NEED FOR SPEED AGAIN!
Tom Cruise has scored a massive cinema hit this year with ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ (read our review here.) And that helped the original ‘Top Gun’ to hit the heights of the top ten chart. The film held the top spot for a number of weeks before falling down the chart. The movie seems to have the power to hover as it moves up a place this week to take aim at the ninth spot.
MORBIUS BITES BACK AGAIN!
And finally, a week after dropping out of the top ten, Jared Leto and his comic book movie ‘Morbius’ takes a bite out of the chart again. The film uses its Vampire Bat wings to rise two places to take the tenth and final spot on the chart.
And that’s all there is for this week. There are several new titles that have been released on PVOD this past week and I urge you to take a look at what is on offer. On the retail front, we are not too far away from seeing some big titles landing within the next two months. There are no confirmed dates yet but we can expect to see the likes of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ becoming available to buy. But that’s for down the road. As for this week…
Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing!
