Official Film Chart - Top Gun Maverick Soars To The Top

This week on The Official Film Chart, The U.S.S Enterprise warps its way in, and Leo Grande makes an appearance but nothing can stop Maverick from flying high again!

Welcome to The Official Film Chart.

JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION IS NOW AVAILABLE TO BUY ON DIGITAL!

After spending several weeks on the PVOD market, the final chapter in the ‘Jurassic World’ saga is now available to buy on digital. ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ is the culmination of the six-film arc that started in 1993 with the original ‘Jurassic Park.’ Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard once again lead the line but are joined by the original cast in Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum. As a closer to the arc and the ‘Jurassic World’ trilogy, it’s a complete letdown. For something that promised so much, it delivers so little. If you’re interested in buying it, I suggest checking first. Some sites offer the cinema version alongside an extended edition while others simply offer the cinema version alone.

THE OFFICIAL CHART

The chart this week gets a bit of a makeover. We have two new entries and one title that rises to take a place inside the top ten. To make way for these three new arrivals, we must say goodbye to ‘Lightyear’, ‘Uncharted’, and the ‘Top Gun/ Top Gun: Maverick Boxset.’ But what is holding the top spot this week? Is Maverick still holding fire at the top? Is the mountain summit Entering A New Era? Or has something else hit the top of the chart tree from nowhere? Strap in once again.

MAVERICK IS STILL DEFENDING THE TOP SPOT!

For another week, the top spot is held by the terrific ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ The film was thirty-six years in reaching us. But once it did, it took to the skies and never came down. Tom Cruise is back at his very best in the film which is both a fantastic sequel in its own right but also a wonderfully nostalgic look back at the original. Fans lapped up the sequel while a new generation discovered Maverick for the very first time. The nods back to the 1986 original are evident but the film also moves forward with the times, bringing Maverick kicking and screaming into the twenty-first century. The film is a total delight with great support from Miles Teller and a moving cameo from Val Kilmer.

A NEW AGE REMAINS IN THE SECOND SPOT!

Remaining firm in the second position is the dramatic sequel ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era.’ The second big screen adaptation of the classic ITV drama continues its good form near the top of the chart. Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, astonishes the family by revealing that long ago she was gifted a villa in the South of France by the Marquis de Montmirail, who has recently passed away.  The new marquis invites the family to visit the villa. Meanwhile, a film production company wants to use Downton to shoot a silent film. The cast is all excellent as normal and the film as a whole is moving and enjoyable. Fans will love it and lap it up in their droves.

THE FANTASTIC BEASTS CLAW THEIR WAY BACK UP THE CHART!

Clawing its way up the chart by two places is the third film in the Wizarding World franchise. Once again, ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore’ takes a top three placing, ending the week in the third position. Set several years after the events of its predecessor, the film sees Albus Dumbledore tasking Newt Scamander and his allies with a mission that takes them into the heart of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald’s army. The cast includes Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Ezra Miller, and Mads Mikkelsen. The film did ok at the box office but has seen its fortunes boosted on home entertainment. It has certainly found its market on the home formats and continues to sell well.

STAR TREK BEAMS INTO THE FOURTH PLACE!

Last week saw the annual Star Trek Day. It also saw the release on Blu-ray and DVD of ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture-The Director’s Edition.’ This version of the film is the best version of the original movie featuring the original cast. With better visual effects, better sound, and looking pristine, the film is much better. And the fans agree with me as the movie beams down and warps into the chart in the fourth place as our highest new entry. It does play more like a reunion episode of the TV series. But it is also a terrific science fiction film in its own right. The original crew is all back together in an adventure that manages to keep us entertained. And with a brilliant score from the legendary Jerry Goldsmith to boot, the film kicks off the Star Trek movie universe in style.

TOP GUN LOSES ALTITUDE!

The top five this week are rounded out by the original ‘Top Gun.’ The film loses two places as it ends the week in fifth place. The film managed to hang onto the coattails of its sequel and became a number one title in its own right. We lost it for a while but it again flew back into the top ten when its sequel was released on digital download. The film remains a brilliant 1980s movie and one with a soundtrack that still plays around the world today. A true bona fide classic.

THE BATMAN HOLDS FIRM AT NUMBER SIX

Holding firm onto his sixth place is the superhero detective noir ‘The Batman.’ The film has been a great success ever since it hit cinemas back in March. It hit home entertainment back in June and has been in the top ten ever since. While not the best Batman film of them all, it still has enough going for it to be a good addition to the DC superhero movie stable.

LEO GRANDE HAS SOME GOOD LUCK!

Our second and final new entry gets some good luck as it enters in the seventh position. And we say a fond hello to ‘Good Luck To You, Leo Grande.’ The movie is a British sex comedy-drama film that stars Emma Thompson and Daryl McCormack. The story tells of a widowed woman who hires a young sex worker. She explains that she has never had an orgasm and is insecure about her body and age. The film is quite touching in many ways and for once, it doesn’t shy away from the issues it raises. It is also, at times, hilariously funny. It is the perfect movie for couples and will entertain in many ways.

SING 2 RAISES ITS VOICE AGAIN!

Rising a single place up to the eighth position, the animated sequel ‘Sing 2’ raises its voice and starts to belt out its tunes once again. The film has been a roaring success on the home entertainment formats ever since it made its debut.

SONIC JOGS DOWN TO NINTH PLACE!

Losing a place this week is the brilliant family sequel ‘Sonic The Hedgehog 2.’ The film is the family movie of the summer and is delightfully entertaining. A third film will be released next Christmas and will feature Shadow The Hedgehog as the villain.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS COMMANDS THE TENTH SPOT!

And finally, thanks to the success of the Prime Video series ‘The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power’, this week sees ‘The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy’ make its way into the top ten in the tenth and final spot on the chart as it rises eight places.

FINISHING OFF!

And our time is up. The chart flight has ended. We are back on the ground for yet another week. Next week should see ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ make an impression on the chart placings. But where it will debut is anyone’s guess. But until next week…

Whatever you decide, whatever you buy, stay safe, be kind, look after each other, and happy viewing.

RIP Queen Elizabeth II. May she Rise In Glory.

Long Live The King.
